This constant external validation or criticism makes it incredibly hard to cultivate genuine self-worth, pushing us to believe our value is solely tied to our appearance. The problem isn't our bodies; it's the societal system that benefits from making us feel inadequate. 'Deep-rooted fatphobia' isn't just about disliking larger bodies; it's a systemic issue tied to sexism, classism, and racism, dictating who is deemed worthy and who isn't. We're told to love ourselves, but then bombarded with images and messages that celebrate only one very specific body type. This creates a vicious cycle of self-doubt and internalised fatphobia that can be incredibly damaging. So, how do we navigate this? For me, it started with challenging those 'narrow-ass beauty standards' myself. I began unfollowing accounts that didn't represent diverse bodies and actively sought out plus-size creators and body-positive communities online. Seeing other curvy women confidently embracing themselves, rocking amazing fashion, and speaking out against judgment was truly transformative. It helped me realize that my body is not a problem to be solved, but a vessel for my life experiences. Another crucial step has been reclaiming my wardrobe. For years, I wore clothes that hid my shape, convinced that was the 'right' thing to do. Now, I wear what makes me feel good, whether it's a form-fitting dress or a comfortable oversized sweater. Fashion should be about self-expression, not concealment. Finding brands that genuinely cater to full-figured women, rather than just sizing up straight-size clothes, has made a huge difference in my confidence. Ultimately, building self-worth beyond appearance is an ongoing journey. It means focusing on my strengths, my passions, and the connections I have with others. It means reminding myself daily that my worth is inherent, not conditional on the shape or size of my body. It's about dismantling those internalised beliefs that society has tried to impress upon us.
