🕊️ A CNA’s Burden: The Hoyer Lift Tragedy
🕊️ A CNA, A Hoyer Lift, and the Weight of Responsibility
Sometimes the hardest stories to tell are the ones that expose the truth behind the job titles we wear.
A Certified Nursing Assistant was recently indicted after a tragic accident involving a Hoyer lift, a patient fell, suffered injuries, and later passed away. It’s a devastating moment for everyone involved, the patient, their family, and the caregiver who will never be the same again.
💭 This isn’t just about blame.
It’s about the reality of caregiving in understaffed, overworked, and emotionally heavy environments. CNAs lift bodies and hearts every day, often alone, exhausted, and trying their best with what they have.
💔 The Truth Behind the Tragedy
• Many facilities require two people for Hoyer lifts, yet short staffing often leaves aides doing it alone.
• Training and maintenance are critical, yet not every CNA gets the time or support to refresh those skills.
• Policies look good on paper, but the real world of care is messy, rushed, and full of impossible choices.
This tragedy is a call for change, not just punishment.
We must talk about safe staffing, proper training, and mental health support for those who give care every day.
🫶🏾 Caregivers, Please Hear This:
It is okay to ask for help.
You are human. You are not weak for needing another set of hands.
You are not unprofessional for saying, “I can’t do this alone.”
You are protecting yourself and your patients.
Never let anyone make you feel guilty for choosing safety over speed.
✨ Final Thought:
Behind every badge, there’s a heartbeat, and behind every tragic headline, there’s a system that needs healing.
Let’s start talking about it.
Let’s support the ones who care for everyone else.

Well said. I felt terrible for that worker. She probably asked, and her co-worker told her to do it alone. Trust me, I know many coworkers who will complain to assist. Even the nurses have problems assisting. She's in trouble, and everyone is saying she should have known better. Yet, they are the same ones who fail to help or work as a team.
