Love castles and wine? Visit Rhine Valley, Germany
The Rhine Valley is such an underrated travel destination — most Singaporeans have probably never even heard of the Rhine Valley. But if you’re into castles, wine, and fairytale villages, this is your sign to go.
We took a FlixBus to Düsseldorf, rented a car, and road-tripped through one of the most scenic parts of Germany — The Romantic Rhine Valley.
🎉 Carnival Season — We didn’t even plan for it, but ended up there during Karneval season (Feb/March) — and suddenly found ourselves in full-on street party mode.
🏰 Fairytale Castles — The Rhine River is lined with over 40 castles, most built during the medieval period to control trade. It honestly felt like driving through a real-life fantasy map.
Here are some that stood out:
🏯 Marksburg Castle (Braubach): The only hilltop castle in the region that’s never been destroyed. Super well-preserved with dramatic views over the river
🏚 Rheinfels Castle (St. Goar): A massive castle ruin with tunnels, towers, and huge stone walls. You can climb to the top and get panoramic views of the Rhine River valley 🌄
🏰 Pfalzgrafenstein Castle (Kaub): Tiny, white castle in the middle of the river, only accessible by boat. Looks like something straight out of a fairytale
🍇 Wine & Villages — The Soul of the Region
This area is part of Germany’s Middle Rhine Wine Region, known especially for Riesling (light, crisp white wine). You can literally pull over into a town, walk into a family-run Weinstube (wine tavern), and do a spontaneous tasting. 💕
🏘️ Towns You Must Stop In:
- Bacharach: Picture-perfect with timber-framed houses and cobblestone alleys. There’s even a castle-turned-hostel (Burg Stahleck) perched above the town
- Rüdesheim am Rhein: Visit Drosselgasse, a narrow alley packed with pubs, music, and wine bars. There’s also a cable car ride that takes you over the vineyards with dreamy river views 🍇🚠
- St. Goar: Small but stunning town right across from Rheinfels Castle. A quiet base if you want something more chill

It was such a perfect balance of history, scenery, culture, and chaos (thanks to Karneval).
Even years later, this trip remains one of the most visually stunning and vibe-rich memories from my exchange year.
💡 Quick Travel Tips:
📅 Best time to visit: Spring to early autumn OR Feb/March for Carnival. When we went in February it was low season and we had the whole town to ourselves everywhere we went.
🚗 Rent a car! You’ll want to stop at random castles and lookout points
⛴ Consider doing a day cruise along the Rhine to see castles from the water
🍷 Always say yes to Riesling
🎒 Pack a mix of walking shoes + something warm — the valley can be chilly near the river

Some had lovely weekly markets with fresh produce and handmade crafts. Taking the time to stroll during these markets offered a more authentic feel of local life. Plus, tasting regional food was a delicious bonus. For travel mode, while renting a car is excellent for flexibility, consider combining it with river cruises. The cruise provided a relaxing contrast to driving and reveals castles and landscapes from a unique angle, often not accessible by road. Lastly, don’t underestimate variable weather by the river — layering clothes is essential. It can get chilly near the water, even in warmer months. Packing comfortable walking shoes and a warm jacket made a big difference during my castle hikes and village walks. If you appreciate medieval history, picturesque scenery, and quality wine paired with vibrant local culture, the Rhine Valley will not disappoint. It’s a destination that truly blends natural beauty and cultural richness into an unforgettable travel experience.
