Kuta Lombok feels like Bali without the traffic

🌴 Guide to Kuta, Lombok 🏝️✨

Kuta Lombok seriously surprised me — it’s a very walkable area in the South of Lombok, filled with tons of beautiful restaurants and cafes and near to the most stunning beaches 😍 It reminded me of the Canggu / Seminyak area in Bali but without the crowds and traffic. Here’s what you can’t miss 👇

🏡 Stay: El Tropico Hotel — tropical boho dream right in the middle of town with a lovely pool area decked out with cabanas, bean bags and beach chairs 🌺 Daily breakfast was also pretty good (you get to choose a dish, rather than buffet style breakfast). Perfect place to base yourself while in Kuta.

🍸 Drink: Captikus bar — push open a bookshelf (yes really 👀) and step into Indonesia in the past. Cocktails are inspired by local dishes — the Bolu Pandan with creamy pandan foam was heavenly. Bartenders were super friendly and welcoming - definitely recommend coming here.

🏄‍♀️ Do: Learn to surf at Selong Belanak — the beach is lined with surf schools ready to give you a lesson 🌊

🪂 Adventure: Go paragliding at Sky Lancing — you’ll fly over turquoise bays and rolling hills. 💙

🌊 Chill: Mawun Beach for peaceful swim, Tanjung Aan 🥥 Tanjung Aan was quite dirty when I went but would still recommend to go for awhile before visiting Bukit Merese which is right next door.

🌅 Sunset watching: Bukit Merese (best view in town) or Ryan Café for golden-hour Bintangs 🌞

🍜 Eat: Jiang Nan, Otaku Ramen, Pronto Pizza — all surprisingly delicious!

🗓️ Next time: Tomang Omang Beach, Mandalika Beach Club, Goa Kotak 👀

Save this for your next island escape — Lombok might just be Bali’s cooler, calmer sister 😌🌴

... Read moreDuring my visit to Kuta Lombok, I found the pace of life refreshingly relaxed compared to Bali’s often hectic tourist hubs. One of my favorite ways to spend the afternoon was chilling at Mawun Beach—its calm, crystal-clear waters are perfect for a peaceful swim and unwinding away from busy crowds. Nearby, Bukit Merese provides an unbeatable vantage point for watching stunning sunsets that paint the sky golden, a truly magical experience that feels intimate due to the area’s low visitor numbers. If you're looking to immerse yourself in local culture and flavors, make sure to visit Captikus bar. The speakeasy-style hidden entrance adds a sense of adventure to your evening, and the pandan-inspired cocktails with creamy foam are unlike anything I've had elsewhere. Their bartenders are genuinely warm and knowledgeable, making it easy to engage and learn about Indonesia’s culinary influences. For active travelers, taking a surf lesson at Selong Belanak beach is a must. The gentle waves are ideal for beginners, and several surf schools offer affordable and friendly classes. I also highly recommend trying paragliding at Sky Lancing to get a bird’s-eye view of the turquoise bays and rolling hills—it’s an adrenaline rush that showcases Lombok’s breathtaking landscape from a unique perspective. Comparatively, while Tanjung Aan beach showed signs of neglect when I visited, the adjacent Bukit Merese trail offers rewarding views and a quieter atmosphere. For the foodie adventurers, local eateries such as Jiang Nan, Otaku Ramen, and Pronto Pizza surprise with their delicious and diverse menus—perfect for casual dining after a day of exploring. Planning your next trip? I suggest adding Tomang Omang Beach, Mandalika Beach Club, and Goa Kotak to your itinerary. These spots are the next gems on the rise and promise more tranquil escapes with authentic island vibes. Overall, Kuta Lombok impressed me as a serene alternative to Bali’s bustling hotspots. It’s ideal for travelers seeking a tropical escape with laid-back luxury, local charm, and natural beauty all rolled into one. Save this guide for your next island adventure and prepare to experience Lombok’s cooler, calmer sister charm first-hand.
