Best eats in HCM 🇻🇳

✨ Saigon eats I’ll never forget! 🇻🇳✨

1️⃣ Pizza 4P’s

No intro needed — the most famous pizza spot in all of Vietnam. 🙌 We went half-and-half: burrata & prosciutto and garlic shrimp pizza — both were so savory and satisfying 🍕✨. Also tried the crab pasta, raclette cheese with potato, and potato gratin 😍. Ohhh and don’t forget the sangria — $11 for a full jug 🍷 shared between 4 of us! We were so stuffed from this meal 😋

2️⃣ Bánh Canh Cua 87

This one surprised me! 😍 Chewy tapioca noodles in a super umami prawn & crab broth, topped with pork slices, prawns, lobster balls AND crab meat — all for just around $2-3. 😱

My favourite of the whole trip!!

3️⃣ Pho Vietnam (Michelin guide)

Pho served in a hot stone pot where you get to add everything yourself 🔥🍲. Rich, deep broth and quick service. Solid pho but not life-changing.

⭐️ 7.8/10

4️⃣ Bánh mì at Bánh mì Mẹ In

We shared four different kinds: original, grilled chicken, truffle beef, and beef skewers.

🥖 The original stole the show: crispy outside, fluffy inside, Umami-packed pâté and different cuts of meat for only ~ $3!

Grilled chicken was a close second — the rest were good but kinda just… okay.

⭐️ 8/10 for the original

5️⃣ Bep Mẹ In (Michelin guide)

Hidden in the same alley as the banh mi. We ordered SO much — bánh xèo (crowd fave 👍), bánh căn, stewed pork, crispy pork, morning glory, and coconut fried rice.

Some hits, some misses — morning glory was too salty and coconut rice a bit bland. Still a great overall spot to taste classic Vietnamese dishes.

6️⃣ A By Tùng

Fine dining 16 courses for around $120. Dishes came in groups which made the whole experience feel very intentional and well paced ✨

Starters:

Almond milk drink topped with caviar. Weird combo but surprisingly good. Tasted like bubble tea with popping pearls but with a savoury kick.

Sourdough bread with sesame butter. Simple but very good.

Appetisers:

Oyster with ginger and green apple sauce. The funkiness of the oyster went so well with the tart sauce. One of my favourites.

Amaebi shrimp with guava.

Beef tartare in a creamy sauce with a crispy crackling skin on top. So good.

Betel leaf with herbs. Very refreshing, tasted like an Asian salad.

Pineapple with tomato salt or something like that, super interesting combo.

We also got a palate cleanser, mandarin sorbet and granita 🍊

Next courses:

Deconstructed pho with what I think was seaworm wrapped in wagyu beef, served in a rich beef broth. It came with a tarte filled with foie gras pâté. Definitely one of my favourites of the night.

Scallop with green apple sauce.

Toothfish in sobressada.

Glutinous rice with duck, garlic confit, fried garlic and ikura.

Galicia pork served with six different condiments like starfruit, pesto, leek and others I honestly cannot remember.

Desserts:

Sweet potato with brown butter, kind of like a crème brûlée.

Tofu cream.

Oolong tea with palm sugar to end.

Every dish was beautifully plated and actually tasted good too, not just pretty. Super worth it for the experience.

⭐️ 8.5/10

... Read moreHaving personally explored Saigon’s vibrant food scene, I can say it truly offers a diverse dining experience that caters to every taste and budget. One of my favorite highlights, aside from the famous Pizza 4P’s and its delicious burrata & prosciutto pizza, is the outstanding Bánh Canh Cua 87. The chewy tapioca noodles paired with an umami-packed prawn and crab broth create a comforting yet exciting flavor profile rarely found elsewhere in the city. This dish is a hidden gem for travelers seeking authentic Vietnamese seafood soup without breaking the bank. When it comes to traditional Vietnamese sandwiches, Bánh mì Mẹ In stands out with its perfectly crispy baguette and richly flavored pâté, especially the original version, which offers a wonderful balance of textures and umami notes. Sharing different varieties here allows you to taste nuances in grilled chicken and even truffle-infused beef options. For an upscale experience, A By Tùng is a revelation with its carefully curated 16-course tasting menu that thoughtfully combines local ingredients with fine dining techniques. Highlights like almond milk with caviar and a deconstructed pho with wagyu beef show how Vietnamese cuisine can be elevated without losing its soul. The pacing and presentation enhance the experience, making it a memorable meal for special occasions. Eating out in Ho Chi Minh City also means embracing variety — from the bustling alleys where you can find succulent bánh xèo at Bep Mẹ In to a Michelin-recommended pho with a rich broth served in a hot stone pot. These spots collectively showcase the rich culinary heritage fused with modern twists. For anyone planning a trip to Saigon, I recommend mixing street eats and fine dining to truly appreciate the city’s culinary depth. Don’t miss trying local beverages, like the full jug of sangria at Pizza 4P’s or the mandarin sorbet palate cleanser at A By Tùng, which add refreshing complements to the meal. Exploring Saigon’s food landscape allows you not only to taste delicious dishes but also to experience the warmth and creativity of Vietnamese hospitality firsthand.
