Pt. 1 Functional Tooth Jars

Denver

... Read moreHey everyone! So, you saw my first peek at making these functional tooth jars, and I’m still buzzing about them! When I started this pottery project, I was thinking about little treasures, and what could be more precious than a lost tooth? It got me thinking beyond just the crafting process – what do people actually do with these jars? One of the most common questions I get, and something I looked into myself, is 'how to preserve a tooth in a jar.' It sounds a bit mysterious, but for many, it's about sentimentality, especially for kids' baby teeth. My personal take? After a tooth comes out, gently clean it with water to remove any debris. Some people suggest a very mild antiseptic mouthwash for a quick rinse, not a soak, to ensure it's clean, but plain water is usually sufficient for sentimental purposes. The most crucial step for long-term preservation, for sentimental value, is simply letting it air dry completely. This might take a few days, so place it in a safe, open spot. Once it’s totally dry and free of any moisture, it can be safely stored in your functional tooth jar! You want to make sure there's absolutely no dampness left to avoid any issues down the line like mold or decay. I’ve heard of people using tiny cotton balls or a small piece of tissue at the bottom of their jar to cushion the tooth and keep it stable, which is a neat idea for these little treasures. It's all about keeping those precious memories safe and sound. Beyond just baby teeth, these functional jars can be used for so many other tiny keepsakes. Think about a tiny seashell from a memorable beach trip, a special little bead, a small lock of hair, or even a rolled-up note with a secret wish. That’s why I love the 'functional' aspect – it's not just decorative, it serves a purpose, however small and personal. For my next batch of jars, I'm even thinking about adding little stoppers or lids that are extra secure, maybe with a tiny imprint or a specific glaze that makes them feel even more special and distinctive. The process of making them is so therapeutic, from wedging the clay to shaping it on the wheel, and then seeing them come to life after the firing and glazing. It's incredibly rewarding to transform a lump of clay into a meaningful art piece. It's fascinating how a simple pottery project can spark so much discussion about traditions, memories, and even practical preservation tips. Whether you're making one for a child's tooth fairy collection, creating a unique baby shower gift, or simply want a special place for your own tiny mementos, the thought and care behind a handmade item truly count. I've even seen slightly larger versions of these jars used for storing small craft supplies like beads, buttons, or even tiny seeds for gardening enthusiasts. The key is to make it your own and let your creativity flow, both in crafting the jar itself and deciding what precious little thing it will hold. The possibilities are endless when you combine art with utility. I’m already planning Part 2 of my tooth jar journey, maybe trying out different clay types for varied textures or experimenting with unique glazing techniques to give them even more distinctive finishes. Stay tuned for more pottery adventures and creative storage solutions!
