My little puppies! They’re 5 months old now and have lots of energy! These guys prefer to be outside and having space to run! We still take them out for daily walks and it’s been amazing for our family! My son walks our chihuahua and me and my fiance get the pups! They’ve grown so much since we brought them home but this has been an amazing experience! The pups are brother and sister and came from the same litter. I’m really happy we got them both because Astro doesn’t like to play, he just likes to chill and go on walks. But the puppies have each other to play and roughhouse with!
... Read moreIt's been such an incredible journey raising our German Shepherd Aussie mix puppies, Ranger and Liberty! Seeing all your questions about this wonderful crossbreed, I wanted to share a bit more about what makes them so special and what to expect if you're thinking of bringing one home.
These mixes, often called 'Aussie Shepherds' or 'German Aussies,' are truly something else. Combining the intelligence and loyalty of a German Shepherd with the agility and herding instincts of an Australian Shepherd, you get a dog that's not only stunning visually but also incredibly smart and energetic. Like my two, who are 5 months old now, they really do have an abundance of energy! One of the most common questions I see is, 'Do German Shepherds and Australian Shepherds get along?' From my experience, and what I've learned, they generally blend really well, especially when raised together or properly socialized. Both breeds thrive on having a 'job' and being part of the family, making them excellent companions for active households.
What I've found raising Ranger, my black and tan boy, and Liberty, my beautiful black, white, and brindle girl, is that daily exercise isn't just a recommendation – it's a necessity! They absolutely love being outside, just as I mentioned in my original post. We make sure they get plenty of walks, and having space for them to run and play is crucial. These aren't dogs content to just lounge around all day. Regular physical activity, like long walks, runs, or even dog sports, helps keep them happy, healthy, and out of mischief. I've heard some people find names based on character traits or even things like 'Paw Patrol' for their playful pups, which is so cute! For us, Ranger's name was chosen because he 'likes the forest,' and it perfectly suits his adventurous spirit.
Training is another huge aspect. Both parent breeds are highly intelligent and eager to please, which makes them generally quick learners. However, their intelligence also means they need mental stimulation to prevent boredom. Early socialization is key, too. Introducing them to various people, places, and other animals from a young age helps them grow into well-adjusted adults. My little chihuahua, Astro, has certainly helped with that, teaching them some manners around smaller dogs! It’s been fascinating to see how their personalities develop – Ranger is a bit more chill and loves his walks, while Liberty is all about the roughhousing. Having them together, a brother and sister from the same litter, has been amazing as they always have each other to play with, which is a huge bonus for their energy levels.
When it comes to appearance, these mixes can vary widely, which is part of their charm! You might see anything from the classic German Shepherd colors to the striking merle patterns of an Aussie, or even a brindle coat like Liberty's. Each one is truly unique.
Overall, raising German Shepherd Aussie mixes is an incredibly rewarding experience, full of 'Puppy Love' moments. They are loyal, affectionate, and bring so much joy and laughter into our home. But they do require commitment to their exercise, training, and socialization needs. If you're ready for an active, intelligent, and loving companion, this mix could be perfect for you!
