Tablescape styling

... Read moreI've always believed that a beautifully set table isn't just for special occasions; it's a way to infuse everyday moments with a little extra magic. It’s about creating an inviting atmosphere that makes every meal feel special, whether it’s a grand holiday feast or a simple weeknight dinner with loved ones. One of my absolute favorite parts of tablescaping is the thrill of finding those perfect pieces that bring a vision to life without breaking the bank. Just like with the dinnerware I styled from Ross, you can truly create a high-end look on a budget! You don't need a massive budget or a house full of expensive decor to achieve a stunning table setting. It's all about creativity, smart shopping, and a few clever tricks. So, how do you get started on creating your own 'table escape'? Here are some of my go-to tips and tricks I've learned along the way to help you style a table that truly shines: 1. Start with Your Foundation: Think of your tablecloth or placemats as the canvas for your masterpiece. I love using a neutral base, like a simple white or linen tablecloth, and then adding a runner or individual placemats in a complementary color or texture. Don't be afraid to mix linen with jute, or a solid with a subtle pattern – it adds so much visual interest and depth right from the start. A good foundation sets the tone for the entire tablescape. 2. Layering is Key: This is where the magic really happens! Instead of just a single plate, try layering a charger plate underneath your dinner plate, and then a salad or appetizer plate on top. It instantly elevates the look and adds a touch of elegance. I also love to mix patterns or colors here – maybe a solid charger with a patterned dinner plate, or different colored bowls. Don't forget your flatware and glassware; they're like jewelry for your table, so choose pieces that complement your theme and overall color palette. Even simple options can look luxurious when thoughtfully arranged. 3. The Centerpiece Steals the Show (or Supports It!): Your centerpiece doesn't have to be a grand floral arrangement. While I adore fresh flowers, sometimes I opt for a collection of varying height candles, a simple vase filled with greenery from my garden, or even a bowl of seasonal fruit. The trick is to ensure it's not too tall, so guests can still see each other across the table. For a more casual vibe, consider a cluster of small potted herbs or succulents. The goal is to create visual interest without obstructing conversation. 4. Add Personal Touches: This is where your tablescape truly reflects you and makes your guests feel extra special. Think about using decorative napkin rings, small place cards (even for casual dinners!), or even tiny seasonal favors. Sometimes I'll tuck a sprig of rosemary into a napkin or tie it with a pretty ribbon. These small details make a big impact and show your guests you put thought into their experience. You can also incorporate family heirlooms or small trinkets that tell a story. 5. Don't Forget Lighting for Ambiance: Beyond candles, consider small battery-operated string lights woven through your centerpiece or even tiny lanterns. Soft, warm lighting creates such a cozy and inviting atmosphere, perfect for lingering conversations and memorable moments. It truly transforms the mood of the room. 6. Shop Smart, Not Hard: My biggest secret? Places like Ross, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and even local thrift stores are treasure troves for tablescape elements. You can find unique dinnerware, elegant glassware, and stylish decor at incredible prices. Don't be afraid to buy pieces in small sets and mix them with items you already own, or even other thrift store finds! You can create a cohesive look by sticking to a general theme or pattern rather than trying to match everything perfectly. It’s all about the hunt for those unique pieces that speak to you! Ultimately, tablescaping should be fun and reflective of your personal style. It's about setting a mood and creating memorable moments around the table. Don't be afraid to experiment, try new things, and let your creativity shine! Every table can be an 'escape' to something beautiful.
