I work with both fresh(!) silver wire and oxidized silver wire. Fresh silver is great for stones that can handle the oxidation process, while oxidized silver is better for more delicate stones, like Ethiopian opal, doublets, malachite, fluorite, etc.
The more I wrap stones, the more careful I’ve become about matching the right ways to each stone’s needs.
Using oxidized wire means the stones don’t have to go through the oxidation process, allowing them to avoid exposure to water and chemicals.
In this video, I use “liver of sulfur” and warm water.
One more thing I care about is the water temperature. When working with finished pieces with stones, I’m careful about the temperature. But when it’s just the wire, I don’t have to worry about it.
