But what if I told you there are ways to make the packing part of moving much smoother, setting you up for that stress-free unpacking experience I love? Trust me, a little preparation goes a long way in making your big move feel less like a chore and more like an exciting new chapter. My first golden rule for packing a house to move is: Declutter, declutter, declutter! Seriously, before you even think about grabbing a box, go through every single room and get rid of anything you no longer use, love, or need. This isn't just about saving space; it's about saving time and effort. Why pack, move, and then unpack items that are just going to take up space in your new home? Donate, sell, or discard – you'll feel lighter and more organized right from the start. I found so many things I'd forgotten about during my last purge, and it felt amazing to let them go. Once you’ve decluttered, it’s time to gather your supplies. Don't skimp on this! You'll need sturdy boxes of various sizes, plenty of packing tape (and a dispenser!), bubble wrap, packing paper, markers, and labels. I always pick up a few wardrobe boxes for clothes – they're a lifesaver for keeping garments on hangers and wrinkle-free. Having everything on hand prevents those annoying last-minute dashes to the store. Now for the actual packing. My personal hack is to pack room by room, starting with the areas you use least often, like guest rooms, storage closets, or seasonal decorations. This way, your daily life isn't completely disrupted until closer to moving day. As you pack, be meticulous with your labeling. Don't just write 'Kitchen' on a box. Write 'Kitchen - Dishes & Glasses' or 'Living Room - Books & Decor'. The more specific you are, the easier the 'let’s unpack' phase will be. I even number my boxes and create a simple inventory list, so I know exactly what’s in each one and if anything goes missing. Another genius idea I swear by is creating an 'Essentials Box' for your new home. This is the first box you’ll open, and it should contain everything you need for your first night and morning: toiletries, a change of clothes, medications, phone chargers, basic tools, snacks, pet food, and perhaps a roll of toilet paper and hand soap. This prevents you from rummaging through endless boxes when you're exhausted after moving day. It's a small step that makes a huge difference in reducing immediate stress. For more specific items: wrap fragile items individually with bubble wrap or packing paper, placing them upright in boxes with cushioning. For books, use smaller boxes as they get heavy quickly. For electronics, if you still have the original boxes, use them! If not, take photos of how everything is connected before you unplug it – future you will thank you when you're setting up your entertainment system. And for clothes you're not putting in wardrobe boxes, vacuum-seal bags are fantastic for saving space.
