Eigenji Temple, which is lined up in a quiet mountain overlooking the Echigawa Gorge, was opened by Jakusho Zenji in the 14th century during the Northern and Southern Courts period. At that time, it is said that more than 2,000 ascetic monks gathered in favor of Zen master Autonavi, and there were 56 monks in the mountain, but later it was burned by the war, and the building at the time of the foundation does not exist. The current monastery was restored after the middle of the Edo period.
Based on the will of Jakusho Zenji who hated authority, there is nothing to insist on the formality such as the so-called five-line fence (Sujibei) in the precincts, and it shows a simple appearance in nature.
The large roof of the main hall dedicated to the principal image "Yotsugi Kannon" is covered with reeds from Lake Biwa, and it boasts a fairly large scale as a grass-roofed building in Japan.
The mountain village landscape of Eigenji and Okueigenji "Cultural heritage of water and life" has become a Japanese heritage.
Eigenji Temple is famous for autumn leaves, so there were few people at this time. There is an incense called "Kigan-ko" where you write your wish and pay it.

永源寺は歴史だけでなく、訪れる人々に深い癒しと感動を与えてくれる場所です。私も実際に訪れた際には、静かな山中の自然に包まれ、創建当時の建造物は現存しなくとも江戸時代の再興された伽藍がもつ落ち着いた佇まいに心が和みました。 特に印象的だったのは、本尊である世継観音を祀る本堂の大屋根です。琵琶湖のヨシで葺かれた草葺き屋根は大変珍しく、国内でもかなり大きい規模とのこと。実際に間近で見ると素材の温かみが伝わり、歴史と自然が調和した美しさに魅了されました。 また、永源寺の紅葉は非常に有名ですが、行った時期はあえて少し早めで人も少なく、ゆったりと景観を楽しむことができました。自然に囲まれた場所でこそ味わえる静謐な空気感は都会の喧騒を忘れさせてくれました。 さらに、祈願香というユニークな文化体験が可能です。香に願い事を書いて納め、燃えた灰の中に願い事が浮かび上がる様子はまるで魔法のよう。私も試してみましたが、願いが視覚化される不思議な感覚に幸せな気持ちになりました。旅行や観光の中でこうした心温まる体験ができるのは貴重です。 永源寺は日本遺産にも指定された「水と暮らしの文化遺産」の一部であり、周辺の奥永源寺地域の美しい山村景観もぜひ散策してみてください。自然と歴史が調和する滋賀の魅力がぎゅっと詰まったスポットとして、おすすめの観光地です。
