🌊💨 "Rule of Third" - the secret law of wading divers. Anyone who knows first survives!
.
"Hey! Why is there only 50 bars left?" 😱
The sound of my friends waiting for me, even though we were 20 meters deep, and the way back out of the wreck seemed endless.
This is the moment that made me remember the "Rule of Third" in the vein from that day.
.
📏 So what is the Rule of Third?
A simple rule used by technical line divers and Cave / Wreck wading lines around the world. It is to "divide the air in the tank into 3 parts" like this:
✅ 1 / 3 used to depart (Explore)
✅ 1 / 3 Use Returns
✅ 1 / 3 Emergency Reserves
It's easy, but believe it, many people "forget to think" because they enjoy taking pictures of Nemo fish 🐠 or swimming along the Baracuda herd. 🐟
.
💡 Why divide 3?
Imagine...
The water is calm, it's as comfortable as a beach walk 🌞, but the tide is turning, it's running in the face until it has a strong pedaling fin, 😅 it takes twice as much air as your legs!
Or if a friend runs out of air, has to share the air back together, you'll be very happy to have 1 / 3 left. 👍
🎯 Real example (simple calculation)
You start Dive with a 200-bar tank:
Take 65 bars (1 / 3) to departure
With 135 bars remaining, 👉 it's time to roll back.
Keep the last 65 bars as a backup in case of unexpected events.
.
📌 Remember:
✅, not just caverns or wrecks, Open Water divers can use this idea, for example, in case they are away from the boarding point or if the current is strong.
✅ If there's air left to spare but not used, better than needed, then no!
🤿 "Under water, there's no inflator pump... but on land, there's Siamdive filling you with knowledge."
Remember the Rule of Third every time before Dive, and you'll have fun without a chance to come up with an empty bucket. 😉
