If you're on Java Edition, you can open your world to LAN for local multiplayer (if you're on the same Wi-Fi), but for online play, you'll mainly be looking at Minecraft Realms or third-party servers. For Bedrock Edition (which is fantastic for cross-play across consoles, PC, and mobile!), inviting friends through Xbox Live is incredibly straightforward. How I Invite Friends on Bedrock Edition (Super Easy!): Add Them as a Friend: Make sure you and your friends are connected on Xbox Live. You can usually do this right from the game menu or through the Xbox app on your device. This is the crucial first step if you want them to play Minecraft with you. Load Your World: Start up the world you want to play in. Once you're in, open the in-game menu (usually by pressing Escape or the pause button). Invite Game: Look for the 'Invite Game' option. This will bring up your friends list. Simply select the friends you want to invite, and they'll get a notification to join your world! It's that simple to get them into your game. Playing with Friends on Java Edition (A Bit More Involved, but Worth It!): For Java, getting friends to play online usually means either setting up a server or using a Minecraft Realm. Minecraft Realms: This is Mojang's official paid server hosting service. It's fantastic because it's always online, and you don't need to leave your computer running for your friends to play. You can invite up to 10 friends to your Realm, and setting it up is pretty intuitive right from the game menu. This is my go-to for consistent multiplayer fun! Third-Party Servers: There are thousands of public servers out there offering all sorts of game modes. To invite friends, you just need to give them the server's IP address. If you want to host your own private server for just your friends, that requires a bit more technical know-how (port forwarding, etc.), but there are tons of tutorials online to walk you through it. No matter which version you play, the most important thing is to just get out there and explore with your buddies. There's nothing quite like building a massive castle together, fighting off mobs in a dark cave, or even just goofing around in creative mode.
