Saddest One Piece backstory? Poor Kuma 😭
Okay, fellow nakama, I just had to talk more about Bartholomew Kuma. Seriously, after watching (or reading, if you're a manga reader!) the latest revelations, especially around EP.1132, I'm convinced his story isn't just sad, it's soul-crushing. Many of us constantly debate, 'WHO HAS THE SADDEST ONE PIECE BACKSTORY?', and for a long time, characters like Robin, Chopper, or Law topped my list. But Kuma? He's definitely a strong contender, if not the one. His motivations are so complex and heartbreaking. We knew he was a former king, a Revolutionary Army commander, and then a Shichibukai turned Pacifista. But understanding why he made those choices, particularly his deal with Vegapunk to become a mindless weapon, just adds layers of tragedy. He didn't just leave the Kamabakka Kingdom; he sacrificed everything, including his very self, for a greater purpose – to protect his daughter, Bonney, and ensure the safety of Luffy and his crew. Thinking about him willingly giving up his memories and personality for others... it's just so devastating. And speaking of Bonney, their bond is truly at the core of this tragedy. Seeing her relentless quest to restore him, not fully understanding the depth of his sacrifice, adds another layer of pain. It makes you wonder, 'will Kuma be restored?' I desperately hope so, because he deserves some peace after all he's endured. His Paw-Paw Fruit powers, which we once saw as formidable weapons, now feel like a symbol of his burden, pushing away all pain and memory. When I compare Kuma's backstory to others, what makes it stand out is the ongoing nature of his suffering and sacrifice. Nami's pain was about her village, Robin's about her past, Chopper's about loneliness, Law's about loss. But Kuma's story involves a conscious decision to erase himself, to become a living weapon, all while still carrying out a hidden mission. It's a continuous, silent agony. It's not just a sad past; it's a tragic present and an uncertain future. So, when people ask 'how sad is Kuma's backstory?', my answer is: profoundly, overwhelmingly sad. It's a testament to the masterful storytelling of One Piece that a character who was once an enigmatic villain can be revealed to have such a deeply emotional and selfless journey. What are your thoughts? Do you agree Kuma's story takes the crown for saddest One Piece backstory?
