For anyone else thinking of getting a puppy, or if you've just welcomed one, I wanted to share a few things I've learned during our first few weeks together. It's definitely a big commitment, but so incredibly rewarding. The First Few Days: Settling In The first thing I realized is how important it is to create a safe and welcoming space for your new furry friend. Bisky was a bit overwhelmed at first, so I made sure she had a cozy bed in a quiet corner, away from too much foot traffic. I also puppy-proofed the house, removing anything she could chew or swallow – you'd be surprised what they find interesting! Consistency is key, especially with potty training. Taking her out frequently, especially after waking up, eating, and playing, has made a huge difference. Lots of praise and treats when she goes outside helps reinforce the behavior. Essential Puppy Supplies I Can't Live Without Before Bisky arrived, I stocked up on some essentials, and I'm so glad I did! Here's my must-have list: Crate: This has been a lifesaver for nighttime and when I need to step out. It provides a safe den for her and helps with house-training. High-Quality Puppy Food: I did my research and chose a brand recommended by the vet to ensure she gets all the nutrients she needs for growth. Chew Toys: Puppies love to chew! Having a variety of appropriate chew toys has saved my furniture and shoes. Leash and Collar/Harness: Getting her used to these early on makes walks much easier. Puppy Pads: For those inevitable accidents indoors, especially during the night. Grooming Supplies: A soft brush and puppy-friendly shampoo. Early Training and Socialization Even though she's tiny, I started basic training right away. "Sit" and "stay" are works in progress, but we're getting there! Positive reinforcement with treats and gentle praise works best for Bisky. Socialization is also crucial. Once she had her first round of vaccinations, I started introducing her to other vaccinated dogs and different environments. It's amazing to see her confidence grow. Feeding Schedule and Health Checks Establishing a consistent feeding schedule has been important for Bisky's digestion and for predicting potty breaks. I feed her three times a day, as recommended for puppies. Regular check-ups with the vet are also non-negotiable. They can offer personalized advice and ensure your puppy is healthy and up-to-date on all vaccinations. Bringing Bisky into my life has been one of the best decisions ever.
