Based on my recent move where I combined households with my boyfriend, each bringing two cats, I learned several valuable lessons that might help others in similar situations. Firstly, preparing your cats for the move is crucial. Introducing the idea of the crate early and making it a positive space can reduce stress. Despite some cats being more cooperative, others may vocalize their anxiety or behave unpredictably, like the incident where one cat peed out of stress. Patience and calm reassurances are key during this process. It’s important to confine cats safely to one room during the hectic moving day to prevent them from getting scared or escaping. This also allows movers to work without interruption and gives the cats a familiar space amidst chaos. Be ready for some to seek comfort under covers or in closets, as was the case with some of the cats in this move. Post-move, cats might hide or avoid food due to overwhelming changes in their environment. Offering quiet, cozy spots and keeping the regular feeding schedule helps them adjust. Also, letting at least one cat explore more freely, like how one felt like the “king of the castle,” can encourage others to venture out and settle in. Finally, finding a pet-friendly rental with no additional pet rent or deposits is a blessing. It reduces financial and emotional stress while making the transition smoother for both you and your furry friends. Overall, patience, preparedness, and creating a safe, loving environment are essential for a successful move with cats.
