The first of many mountain hikes
I’ve felt disconnected from nature since moving here
Growing up in Vegas I’ve really come to hate dry climates and in turn I haven’t let myself enjoy all that Southern California has to offer
Every since I hike to the Mt Rose summit in college I have craved mountain tops
At the peak I get this magical feeling of both being as big as the mountain and and small as the cityscape before me
I’m excited to feed my soul and see the world I’m lucky enough to get to experience
I love nothing more than exploring with my sister
I always come out of it feeling so full
Having spent much of my life in the arid environment of Las Vegas, shifting to Southern California felt like a drastic change—not just in scenery, but in mindset. I've found the humid coastal climate challenging, and initially, I didn’t embrace the outdoors here. However, embarking on my first mountain hike since the move was transformative. Hiking up to the Mt Rose summit during college planted a deep craving for mountain tops in me. The tranquility and perspective gained at the summit are unlike anything else; it’s a magical blend of feeling both immense and humble at once, surrounded by towering greenery yet overlooking bustling cityscapes. What truly enriches these experiences is sharing them with my sister. Our hikes become moments of bonding, of laughter and reflection, feeding our souls and strengthening our relationship. I’ve discovered that hiking not only reconnects me with nature but also revitalizes my spirit and physical well-being. The journey up the mountain can be challenging—requiring determination and pacing—but reaching the peak makes all the effort worthwhile. It's a personal sanctuary where stress fades, replaced by awe and gratitude for the natural beauty accessible right in Southern California. For anyone feeling disconnected from their environment or hesitant about outdoor activities, I highly recommend giving mountain hiking a chance. Start with manageable trails and gradually work up to more ambitious summits like Mt Rose. Each hike offers a unique experience, from the changing flora and fauna to the breathtaking views that shift with the seasons. Remember to prepare adequately with proper footwear, hydration, and weather-appropriate gear to fully enjoy the adventure and stay safe. Reconnecting with nature close to home has been a healing process, reminding me of the vastness of the world and the simple joys within it. It’s made me appreciate that even if you come from a place like Las Vegas where the landscape is vastly different, you can find beauty and rejuvenation in new terrains. Exploring Southern California’s mountains has opened my heart to the outdoors, motivating me to plan many more hikes ahead, each one a step toward deeper awareness and joy.
