In this entry of my journal, I delve into the theme of Christmas gluttony—exploring the disappointment that often accompanies the holiday season when expectations clash with reality. The excitement of tearing open gift boxes fades when the reality of receiving something unanticipated sets in. Each year, I find myself caught in this emotional whirlwind, desperately hoping to receive what I envisioned. Among the ribbons and wrapping paper, I confront painful truths: are my desires too great? Do I come off as ungrateful? While these feelings are visceral, they are also universal. Many experience similar emotions during the festive season, which can amplify feelings of inadequacy and entitlement. The act of gift-giving, ideally joyful and generous, can inadvertently highlight the discrepancies between what we hope for and what we are given. Reflecting on this, I understand the importance of embracing vulnerability. It opens the door to more authentic conversations about our feelings. When we share these stories—even those tinged with disappointment—we foster a deeper connection with ourselves and others.
