Favorite inktober piece I drew last month

I'm so excited to share more about this Inktober piece, especially since it's one of my absolute favorites! When I first started brainstorming for Inktober last month, I knew I wanted to dive deep into Greek mythology, and Asteria immediately captured my imagination. She's not as widely known as some other goddesses, but her story is absolutely captivating. Asteria, the Titaness of nocturnal oracles and falling stars, is a daughter of the Titans Coeus and Phoebe, making her the sister of Leto and aunt to Apollo and Artemis. Her connection to the cosmos is profound; she literally embodies the starry night. I was particularly drawn to her eventual transformation during her escape from Zeus, where she plunged into the Aegean Sea and became the island of Delos – a floating isle that later became the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. This idea of a deity transforming into a celestial body, then a sacred land, really resonated with me and fueled my artistic vision. For this particular ink drawing, I aimed to capture Asteria's serene yet powerful presence. The OCR notes mentioned her 'stern expression' and 'upward gaze,' which perfectly aligns with how I envisioned her as she surveys the vastness of the cosmos. I chose a 'blue and white ink' palette to symbolize the ethereal quality of the night sky and the purity associated with stars. The 'flowing gown' was designed to evoke a sense of movement and divinity, almost as if she's drifting through space herself. One of the elements I spent a lot of time on was the 'blue orb with a triple moon symbol.' This was my artistic interpretation to represent her dominion over divination and her powerful connection to lunar cycles, which are often linked with foresight and mystic knowledge. The triple moon is a powerful symbol often associated with goddesses and the phases of the moon – waxing, full, and waning – representing maid, mother, and crone, or birth, life, and death. While not directly tied to Asteria in traditional texts, I felt it beautifully underscored her role as a goddess of divination and Hecate's mother, as Hecate is often depicted with lunar symbolism. The 'starry dark blue background' wasn't just a decorative choice; it was crucial for setting the mood. I wanted to create a sense of infinite depth and mystery, truly immersing Asteria in her element. Adding 'silver and yellow star decorations' in the close-ups helped give the piece that extra sparkle and dimension, making it feel truly celestial. It’s moments like these, where you can blend mythological narratives with creative artistic interpretations, that make Inktober such a rewarding experience. Drawing mythological figures isn't just about recreating ancient descriptions; it's about interpreting their essence and bringing them to life through your own lens.
