Crows

I've always been drawn to crows, not just for their striking appearance but for the mystique that surrounds them. When I sit down with my sketchbook, especially here in Upstate New York, it's often their intelligent eyes and sleek feathers that inspire me. Their black plumage often links them to the unseen, to secrets, and sometimes even to death or the passage between worlds. Yet, this isn't always a negative association; often, it’s about transformation, rebirth, and the natural cycle of life. They are the ultimate survivors, adapting to almost any environment, which speaks to their resilience and cunning. In other traditions, crows are seen as bringers of wisdom and insight. Their sharp intelligence is undeniable; they are problem-solvers, tool-users, and have complex social structures. This intellectual prowess translates into their symbolic role as messengers or guides, offering profound insights if we're willing to listen. I've heard stories of crows leading people to lost items or even warning them of danger, reinforcing their image as spiritual advisors. When sketching them, I try to capture that knowing gaze, that sense of ancient wisdom in their eyes. The "Crows" title written in script on my sketchbook page feels almost like an ode to these complex creatures. I've often adorned pages with little yellow star cutouts, which, to me, symbolize the glimmer of magic and wonder they bring to the mundane. From the Celtic belief in the Morrigan, a goddess who often appeared as a crow, to Native American tales where the crow is a trickster or a creator figure, their symbolism is incredibly rich and varied. They can represent prophecy, luck, or even mischievousness, depending on the context. For instance, in Norse mythology, Odin had two ravens (often interchangeable with crows in their symbolism), Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory), who flew around the world and brought him information. This really emphasizes their role as conduits of knowledge. Understanding these layers of meaning makes my art feel more connected to something ancient and profound. It’s not just about drawing a bird; it's about connecting with a symbol that has resonated with humanity for millennia. Every line in my sketches, every shadow, tries to convey a piece of that deep, multifaceted symbolism. The various poses and styles in my sketchbook aren't just artistic choices; they're an attempt to depict the many facets of crow symbolism – from their solitary wisdom to their playful mischief.
