... Read moreSo, after having an absolute blast drawing Cid Kagenou from 'The Eminence in Shadow,' I couldn't help but dive a little deeper into his world, even before watching the anime myself! It’s incredible how much personality you can capture on paper, and honestly, learning about Cid has made me even more excited to finally see his adventures unfold.
For anyone curious about Cid, or perhaps even searching for 'Mrs. Kagenou' (which, by the way, usually refers to Cid himself and his family background, though his secret identity as Shadow is far more prominent!), you’re in for a treat. Cid is a truly unique protagonist. He's not your typical hero; he's actually obsessed with being the ultimate secret mastermind, pulling strings from the shadows, and making his powers look way cooler than they already are. He literally lives out his chuunibyou fantasies, creating a whole organization called Shadow Garden to fight a fictional cult, only for it to turn out that the cult is real! My drawing definitely tried to capture that mysterious, powerful vibe, especially with his signature hooded outfit and that dramatic silhouette against what I imagined as a fiery planet. Hearing about his iconic 'I am Atomic' move gave me chills – it’s such a powerful line and really defines his over-the-top, yet incredibly effective, persona.
Drawing characters like Cid, with their specific aesthetics and powerful auras, can be a really fun challenge. When I was working on him in my sketchbook, I focused a lot on making his cloak flow dynamically, giving him that elusive, shadowy presence. For fellow artists out there, I found that layering various shades of blue and purple with my colored pencils really helps to bring out the depth in dark clothing and creates those cool glowing effects, especially if you’re trying to replicate something as epic as an 'I am Atomic' explosion. Pay close attention to the lighting – even if it’s just a silhouette, a strong light source makes all the difference in making your character pop. Capturing the intensity in his eyes, even when partially obscured by the hood, was key to conveying his 'eminence.'
I also learned that while Cid (or Shadow, as he primarily calls himself) is the central focus, the world of 'The Eminence in Shadow' is vast and filled with interesting characters that form his Shadow Garden. His journey to secretly save the world while pretending to be a background character is what draws so many people in. It's not just about flashy fights; it's about his hilarious inner monologue, meticulous planning (even if it's based on his wild imagination), and the unexpected ways his fabricated stories become reality. So, if you're like me and just discovering him through fan art, know that there's a whole world of awesome, humorous, and action-packed storytelling waiting for you. It's been a blast to draw him and get a perfect sneak peek into his wonderfully chaotic world!
