This was a request; I initially planned to do this entirely in colored pencil, but my kid destroyed what I had completed so this is the second attempt in oil pastels ✨

This one isn’t my favorite, but I still had fun and the requester was pleased. I haven’t done much work with oil pastels but at least I tried and it was a learning experience 😁

Unlike colored pencils, oil pastels have a very different texture and blending technique. One helpful tip I found was to work in layers gently, building up colors slowly to achieve a rich, vibrant effect without smudging. Oil pastels can also be used on various surfaces like textured paper or canvas, which opens up more creative possibilities than traditional sketch paper. I personally discovered that using a blending stump or even my fingers helped to smooth transitions between colors, giving the artwork a more polished look. It’s important to be patient and expect a few trials before mastering the medium. What I enjoyed most was the tactile experience of oil pastels—they offer a satisfying way to express emotion and depth in drawings. Even if the final piece isn’t perfect, the process itself is rewarding. I recommend anyone interested in expanding their drawing techniques to give oil pastels a try, especially if you want to add more texture and vibrancy to your art. Remember, sometimes unexpected setbacks like ruined colored pencil drawings can lead you to discover new artistic methods and styles that you might love even more.
