Happy 118thFounders DaySorors 💕💚

Happy Founders’ Day to the first and finest Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated 💕💚

118 years ago, twenty visionary Black women chose service, sisterhood, scholarship, and leadership as their legacy…

And we’re still carrying it forward today.

So yes, I’m stepping into work today in full pink and green spirit.

A little soft suiting, a satin jacket, delicate bow earrings, and just the right hint of sparkle from my AKA brooch.

Honored. Grateful. Proud.

To be a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Since 1908, and still setting the standard 💫

💚 Who else is celebrating today? Drop your chapter below!

xoxo,

... Read moreThe significance of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA) extends far beyond its founding in 1908. As the first Greek-letter sorority established by African American women, AKA represents a monumental chapter in both Black history and the broader narrative of women's leadership in America. For many members, Founders’ Day isn’t just a commemoration but a vibrant celebration of enduring bonds and a reaffirmation of commitment to the sorority’s core values: service to all mankind, scholarship, leadership, and sisterhood. Personally, wearing the pink and green colors on this day feels like carrying on a powerful heritage. The subtle elegance of a satin jacket or an AKA brooch isn’t just a fashion statement but a proud symbol of identity and purpose. What makes AKA truly special is the continued impact of its programs targeting education, health, family empowerment, and economic development. Over the years, the sorority has launched significant initiatives like the Educational Advancement Foundation and the HBCU for Life: A Call to Action campaign, aimed at supporting historically Black colleges and universities and addressing social challenges in Black communities. Engagement on Founders’ Day can vary from chapter to chapter, but common across all is a deep sense of gratitude and pride in belonging to such a trailblazing organization. The hashtags like #AKA1908, #FoundersDay, and #FirstAndFinest not only connect members digitally but also educate and invite allies to celebrate this legacy alongside sorors everywhere. For those working or attending events in pink and green, it becomes a statement of unity and resilience. The tradition of dressing in AKA colors and adorning oneself with sorority symbols inspires confidence and a sense of shared purpose that transcends generation gaps. In celebrating this 118th Founders’ Day, it’s clear that Alpha Kappa Alpha’s founders set a standard that continues to motivate thousands to lead with grace and serve with dedication. Whether participating virtually or in person, sorors and supporters alike honor this milestone by embracing the values that made AKA a beacon of excellence in the Black Greek-letter community and beyond.
