Buttery Homemade Tortillas
Soft, buttery, and made with just a few pantry staples — ready in 10 minutes.
Ingredients
1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature
2 cups all-purpose flour
Pinch of salt
Warm water (about ½–¾ cup, as needed)
Directions
Mix the dough
In a large bowl, combine the flour and room-temperature butter. Use your hands or a fork to mix until the butter is fully incorporated and the mixture looks crumbly.
Add liquid
Add a pinch of salt. Slowly pour in warm water, a little at a time, mixing until the dough comes together into a soft ball.
Knead
Transfer the dough to a clean surface and knead for 3–5 minutes, until smooth, elastic, and slightly silky.
Divide
Form the dough into a ball and divide into 8 equal pieces (like slicing a pie).
Roll
Roll each piece into a thin, rustic circle. Don’t worry about perfection — the organic shape is part of the charm.
Cook
Heat a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Place one tortilla in the pan and cook until bubbles form and the surface looks dry (15–30 seconds). Flip and cook the other side until lightly golden.
Repeat & serve
Repeat with remaining tortillas. Serve warm or let cool completely before storing.#homemadetortillas #simplerecipe #pantrystaples #easyrecipes #butterytortillas
Making homemade tortillas is a rewarding and surprisingly simple cooking experience that anyone can try—even if you’re new to baking. Using basic ingredients like all-purpose flour, unsalted butter, salt, and warm water, you can whip up soft, buttery tortillas fresh from your kitchen without any special equipment. One tip I’ve found helpful is to ensure your butter is truly at room temperature before mixing. This allows it to incorporate smoothly into the flour, creating a tender, crumbly dough that comes together nicely as you add warm water. When kneading, aim for about 3 to 5 minutes until the dough feels silky and elastic; this will help your tortillas puff slightly when cooking. Rolling the dough doesn't have to be perfect—allowing the tortillas to retain a rustic, handmade look adds charm and character. I like to use a lightly floured surface to prevent sticking and roll each piece as thin as possible without tearing. Heating your pan over medium-low heat is crucial for even cooking. Watching for bubbles to form on the surface signals it's time to flip, resulting in those lightly golden spots and a soft texture that melts in your mouth. Cooking tortillas this way also helps them stay pliable and great for wraps or tacos. Finally, serving them warm enhances their flavor and softness, but you can store cooled tortillas in an airtight container for a couple of days and reheat them gently on the pan or microwave. This approach to homemade tortillas has turned out to be a staple in my kitchen, especially for quick weeknight meals or weekend brunches. Experiment with adding herbs or a pinch of garlic powder into the dough for a flavorful twist. Homemade tortillas provide a satisfying alternative to store-bought ones and are a fun way to connect with traditional cooking methods while enjoying the comfort of fresh, buttery bread.
