Hey everyone! If you're like me, the 'double full' in cheerleading felt like an impossible dream for a long time. It's that exhilarating tumble where you complete two full twists while flipping backwards – a true showstopper! But trust me, with dedication and the right approach, you can master it. I remember my first attempts; it felt like I was just flailing in the air! The key, I learned, isn't just brute strength but precision and understanding the mechanics. Before even thinking about a double full, make sure your single full is solid, consistent, and feels completely comfortable. A strong round-off back handspring back tuck is also non-negotiable. These are your building blocks! Breaking down the double full, it’s all about the set, the twist, and the landing. Your set needs to be high and powerful, creating enough airtime for two rotations. I found focusing on driving my arms up and spotting a point high above me really helped. Then comes the twist – this is where many of us struggle. It’s a rapid rotation, initiated by pulling your arms in tight to your body as you tuck, while simultaneously using your head and shoulders to whip your body around. Think of it like a corkscrew! My coach always told me to 'spot then snap' – spot your landing, then snap your twist. Don't try to look for the ground too early, or you'll open up and lose your twist. One common mistake I made was trying to rush the second twist. It felt like I had to force it, but that usually led to a messy landing or not completing the twist. Instead, focus on maintaining that tight, compact shape and letting the momentum carry you through both rotations. Drills were my best friend! Practicing double twist jumps on a tumble track or trampoline, concentrating on that tight body shape, was invaluable. Also, doing single fulls with an emphasis on a higher set and faster twist helped build the muscle memory for the second twist. Safety is paramount. Seriously, don't try this without proper spotting and a soft landing surface. Work with your coaches on progressions. Start with mats, then move to spring floor. It builds confidence and prevents injuries. My journey to landing my double full was full of frustrating moments, but the feeling when I finally stuck it was absolutely euphoric! It’s a testament to consistency and believing in yourself. Keep practicing those fundamentals, visualize your success, and don't be afraid to fail – each attempt is a step closer to nailing that incredible double full!
