What would you program your action button to do?

Dear, SweeTees 💌📱

Your Action Button might be doing… absolutely nothing exciting.

And that is a tragedy.

On newer iPhones like the iPhone 15 Pro and later models, Apple replaced the classic Ring/Silent switch with the Action Button.

Most people leave it set to Silent Mode.

But the real magic happens when you connect it to the Shortcuts. Once you create a shortcut, your Action Button can run almost anything.

In this video I’m showing how to assign that shortcut so the button becomes a true one-press tool.

Here’s the quick setup:

1. Create your shortcut in the Shortcuts app

2. Open Settings

3. Tap Action Button

4. Swipe until you see Shortcut

5. Tap the drop-down menu

6. Select the shortcut you want

Now whenever you press and hold the Action Button… your shortcut runs instantly.

Which means your button could:

✨ open a specific app

✨ start a routine

✨ control smart home devices

✨ launch a productivity setup

✨ start a focus mode

One little button.

A lot of possibilities.

💜 Mini Must-Knows

• The Action Button works with any shortcut you create, so automation possibilities are basically endless

• Press and hold the button to activate the assigned action

• If you select Shortcut but don’t choose one from the menu, the button won’t do anything

✨ Bonus idea:

You can create a multi-step shortcut that opens apps, changes focus mode, and sets brightness all at once.

Tiny button.

Big main-character energy.

Save this if you want your iPhone to work for you instead of just sitting there looking pretty 📱✨

... Read moreWhen I first got my new iPhone with the Action Button, I honestly just kept it on silent mode. It felt like a fancy new button that just replaced the old switch, and to be honest, I didn't think much about it. But then I started seeing all these cool ideas online, and I realized I was seriously underutilizing one of my iPhone's best new features! It's not just for silent mode; it's a gateway to super personalized phone use. I remember thinking, 'Is there really a better way than just flipping a switch for silent?' And the answer, I quickly found out, is a resounding YES. The beauty of the Action Button lies in its integration with the Shortcuts app. This little app, which might seem daunting at first, is actually your best friend for customization. It really opens up the 'how can you use automation tools to enhance iOS customization?' question. First, let's talk about the basic settings menu. If you go into Settings > Action Button, you'll see a list of pre-defined actions: Silent Mode, Focus, Camera, Voice Memo, Flashlight, Magnifier, Translate, and Accessibility. For a while, I just toggled between Silent Mode and Flashlight, which is already pretty handy – especially when trying to find my keys in the dark! The OCR even mentions "flashlight on flashlight off," showing how popular and useful this is. But the real game-changer is scrolling to "Shortcut." This is where the magic truly happens. Instead of just setting it to a single function, you can teach your iPhone to do almost anything with one press. For instance, I used to struggle with turning silent mode on and off quickly. With a custom shortcut, my Action Button became a true "silent mode toggle." Now, one long press can switch between ringing and silent, which is way more efficient than digging through the control center. Another one of my favorite custom setups involves Focus modes. The OCR mentioned "dnd - relax," and that's exactly what I did! I created a shortcut that activates my "Relax" Focus, which silences notifications from work apps and sets a calming wallpaper. It's perfect for unwinding after a long day – just press and hold, and instantly my phone helps me de-stress. No more fumbling with menus! Beyond that, the possibilities are endless. I've seen people use it to: Quickly open a specific app: Imagine pressing your button to instantly launch your favorite journaling app or a navigation app when you're about to drive. Control smart home devices: I've set up a shortcut to turn on my bedroom lights and set the thermostat to a cozy temperature right from my Action Button. Launch a productivity setup: A multi-step shortcut could open my calendar, task list, and email all at once, setting me up for work in seconds. Even complex automation: Want to start a timer, play a specific playlist, and send a "be right there!" text, all with one button press? Shortcuts make it possible. This is where the power of automation really enhances your daily iOS experience. My advice for anyone looking to truly customize their iPhone Action Button is to start simple. Think about one or two things you do frequently on your phone that involve multiple taps. Is it turning silent mode on/off? Is it accessing your flashlight? Or maybe launching a specific app? Create a shortcut for that. Then, slowly explore the Shortcuts app – you'll be amazed at the automation tools available. Remember, the Action Button needs to be pressed and held to activate its assigned function. If you find it's not working, double-check your settings to ensure you've selected a specific shortcut after choosing "Shortcut" from the options. Don't leave your Action Button doing "absolutely nothing exciting"—it's a powerful tool just waiting to be customized to fit your life perfectly!
