Middle-earth comes to life on stage! 🧙🏻♂️🌿✨
It’s almost an impossible feat to condense the entire trilogy (more than 11 hours if you’re going by the extended editions) into a 3-hour stage show. Though many scenes are necessarily cut, the heart of the story remains. The special effects and imaginative puppetry contribute to many magical moments in the show. The cast also prove themselves to be true quadruple threats: acting, singing, dancing, and even playing instruments.
I absolutely love the friendship and playful banter between the four hobbits 🍻. I was thrilled to see Jemma Rix, whom I missed the previous time, bring an ethereal, motherly grace to Galadriel 🧝♀️. I also can’t leave out Laurence Boxhall, whose Gollum is spine-chilling and out-of-this-world 🥶🤯.

As a fan who has seen many adaptations of Tolkien's masterpiece, I was truly amazed by how the Singapore production brought Middle-earth alive in such an intimate stage setting. The creative use of imaginative puppetry and special effects had me completely immersed, making the complex world accessible without overwhelming the audience. One of the highlights was the incredible talent of the cast. Not only do they act and sing, but their dancing and live instrument playing add layers of richness to the live experience. Seeing Jemma Rix's graceful and ethereal portrayal of Galadriel really struck a chord with me—she added a touching, motherly presence that grounded the story's magical elements. Laurence Boxhall’s chilling Gollum was another standout. His ability to convey the torment and duality of the character left me both fascinated and unsettled, which I think is a testament to the show's quality. If you plan to attend, don't miss the chance to arrive 20 minutes early to join the hobbits celebrating Bilbo’s eleventy-first birthday—a charming and fun addition that enhances the overall experience. The souvenir program and collectible pins available on-site also make lovely keepsakes for any Tolkien fan. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the Lord of the Rings or simply looking for a spectacular theatre experience in Singapore, this musical offers a magical journey that I highly recommend. The Sands Theatre provides a fantastic venue that complements the show’s immersive and engaging atmosphere perfectly.
