Discussion!
#letschat for the past couple of weeks more often I've been seeing a lot more fake accounts and I started blocking them. Idk if it has to do something about being lgbtqia+ creator or something else but it's getting a bit creepy sometimes and I don't mean the Halloween 🎃👻🍬creepy. I actually mean like seriously creepy. Is lemon8 going to do something about it. Any tips on how to get more engagement from people who aren't fake and also ( not homophobic or transphobic humans)? I genuinely always add hashtags that always aline with my identity as well as the current topic I'm discussing. #enby #nonbinary #lgbtq #lgbtq🌈 #queer #fakeaccounts
I totally get the frustration with fake accounts on platforms like Lemon8! It can feel really disheartening when you're trying to build a genuine community, especially as an LGBTQ+ creator. I've been there, wondering if it's something I'm doing, or if the platform can do more. It's not just annoying; as the original post mentioned, it can get genuinely creepy! Seeing that 'STOP FAKE ACCOUNTS!' message in an image really resonated with me, as it captures how we all feel. Spotting the Fakes: My Personal Red Flags Over time, I've developed a few go-to methods for identifying these accounts. It's like a detective game, but not a fun one! Generic Profile Pictures/No Info: Often, they have no profile picture, or a very generic, stock-photo-like image. Their bio is usually empty or filled with vague, unrelated phrases. Odd Follow/Unfollow Patterns: They might follow hundreds of accounts quickly, then unfollow just as fast. Sometimes they'll follow you, then immediately unfollow if you don't engage. It feels like they're just trying to game the algorithms. Suspicious Comments or DMs: I've noticed comments that are either overly complimentary and generic ("Great post!", "Love your vibe!") or, conversely, subtly negative or provocative. If they slide into DMs with unsolicited links or strange requests, that's a huge red flag. Irrelevant Content: Their posts, if any, are often completely unrelated to their niche or what they initially engaged with. Sometimes it’s just spam or links to external sites. New Accounts: Many are brand new, with only a handful of posts or followers, yet they're interacting with many established accounts. Taking Back Control: My Tips for a Safer Space It's important to remember that we can take steps to protect our online spaces. Block and Report: This is my first line of defense. Lemon8, like other platforms, has reporting mechanisms. I make sure to report accounts that violate community guidelines, especially if they're homophobic or transphobic. It helps the platform learn and potentially take action. Adjust Privacy Settings: While it might limit reach slightly, sometimes tightening privacy settings can help. Consider who can comment on your posts or send you direct messages. Engage with Intention: I try to focus my energy on interacting with accounts that genuinely engage with my content. Responding to thoughtful comments and asking questions back helps build real connections. This is how I’ve found my true community! Curate Your Feed: Actively seek out and follow other LGBTQ+ creators and allies. This helps flood your feed with positive, relevant content and makes it easier to spot the fakes when they pop up. Building a Thriving LGBTQ+ Creator Community My biggest goal is to connect with people who share my experiences and values. Here’s what I've found helpful: Be Authentic: This might sound obvious, but sharing my true self and experiences has attracted others who resonate with it. Don't hide who you are! Use Niche Hashtags: While #LGBTQ and #nonbinary are great, I also delve into more specific hashtags related to my interests, like #queerfashion, #lgbtqtravel, or #enbyartist. This helps me find smaller, more focused communities. Collaborate Mindfully: Connecting with other creators for collaborations, even simple shout-outs, can introduce you to their audience, often bringing in more genuine followers. I always check their community vibe first. Set Clear Boundaries: I've learned that it's okay to ignore or delete comments that don't serve my positive space. My page is my space, and I get to decide what energy I allow in. Focus on Value: Ultimately, if my content provides value, inspiration, or entertainment to my target audience, they'll find me. It's less about chasing numbers and more about cultivating a meaningful space. It’s an ongoing process, and platforms need to do more to combat these issues. But by being proactive, we can definitely make our Lemon8 experience, and platforms like it, much better and safer for everyone, especially for marginalized communities like ours. Let's keep sharing our tips and supporting each other!
