From my personal experience, understanding men's emotional economy requires recognizing the societal pressures that often teach men to hide their true feelings. Many men might appear vulnerable, but this can sometimes be a protective performance rather than genuine emotional openness. For example, some share vulnerable stories or feelings, but this can be a way to seek validation or maintain control in relationships, which is what this article refers to as “weaponized vulnerability.” In my relationships, I've noticed that when men feel safe and accepted without judgment, they gradually shed this guarded approach and begin to express authentic emotions. It’s not about men chasing or trying to please but about cultivating an environment where vulnerability is welcomed and met with empathy. The dynamic of chasing can create imbalance, where one partner feels the pressure to open up or perform vulnerability without genuine emotional connection. Recognizing this helps break cycles of emotional misunderstanding. It’s important to differentiate between performative vulnerability and deep emotional work. In addition, enhancing emotional intelligence for men isn’t just about encouraging them to talk more but supporting them to process and express emotions in ways that feel safe and meaningful. This involves not only the individual effort but also how partners respond with patience and respect. Ultimately, unlearning harmful norms around masculinity and emotional expression opens the door to healthier, more fulfilling relationships where vulnerability is a strength rather than a weapon or a mask.
