How to dress for a Rectangle Body Type

2023/11/2 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! If you're anything like me, you've probably spent countless hours in front of the mirror wondering how to make certain outfits work. My biggest style breakthrough came when I truly understood my body type – the rectangle. I always felt a bit 'straight' or 'athletic,' and once I learned what a rectangle shape actually means – where your bust, waist, and hips are pretty much the same width, with straight hips, bottom, and shoulder line, and an even weight distribution – everything clicked! It's not about being 'straight' in a bad way; it's about embracing your natural lines and knowing how to create a little visual magic to define that waist and add some lovely curves. For me, the key has always been to 'break up the rectangle' and give the illusion of an hourglass figure, even if my natural silhouette is straighter. Let's talk about some game-changing tips I've picked up. First up: Tops and Necklines. This is where you can really make a difference. I learned from a great stylist that investing in a good bra is non-negotiable – it instantly lifts and separates, making your upper body look more defined. When it comes to necklines, I steer clear of anything too square or high-necked because they can make me look boxy. Instead, I gravitate towards V-necks, sweetheart necklines, off-the-shoulder tops, or even simple round necks. These styles help to elongate my neck and draw the eye upwards or create softness around the shoulders. Peplum tops and wrap blouses are also amazing for creating that coveted waist definition without needing a belt. Next, let's dive into Bottoms. Finding the best jeans for a rectangle body shape used to be a challenge for me! I've found that styles with a bit of flare or bootcut at the bottom, or even a wide-leg, really balance out my straight hips and create a more shapely silhouette. High-waisted jeans are also a lifesaver because they naturally cinch in the smallest part of my waist. For skirts, A-line and full skirts are fantastic – they add volume around the hips and create a beautiful contrast with the waist. Flowy trousers can also work wonders, especially if they have some pleating or detail at the waist. When it comes to Dresses, my wardrobe is full of options that focus on defining the waist. Wrap dresses are my absolute go-to – they are universally flattering and hug your figure in all the right places. A-line dresses and fit-and-flare styles are also wonderful for adding curves and creating a defined waistline. And don't forget the power of a good belt! This was a revelation for me. Even a simple shift dress can be transformed by adding a belt to pull in the waist, instantly changing your silhouette. I've also learned to avoid tops or dresses that stop abruptly at the waistline if they don't have any shaping, as they tend to emphasize the straightness. Finally, for those of us who might have a curvy rectangle body shape, meaning you might have a bit more bust or hip but still lack a super defined waist, these tips are still incredibly relevant. It’s all about enhancing what you have and using strategic styling to create the illusion of a more hourglass figure. Layering helps too – think open cardigans or blazers that nip in at the waist. Ultimately, dressing for your body type isn't about hiding anything; it's about celebrating your unique shape and feeling incredibly confident in what you wear. These simple changes have truly elevated my style and boosted my confidence, and I hope they do the same for you!

Did you know there was such thing as a granny rectangle!? It doesn’t get as much love as the square but I think it’s just as cool. This would be the perfect stitch for a bookmark, or a blanket. It’s super simple too! It’s perfect when you don’t want to focus so much on counting stitches and row
