I've noticed that sometimes jokes that seem harmless to one partner can feel disrespectful and hurtful to the other. The key is understanding where the line is drawn—what might be funny to someone might cross a boundary for someone else. For example, I once witnessed a couple joking around with teasing insults like calling each other "hoes" or other hurtful names. Even if it's meant as a joke, words like "you stupid bitch" or "calling her a hoe" can create a sense of disrespect and discomfort. It's important that both people communicate openly about what they find acceptable and make a mutual effort to avoid phrases that undermine respect. One way we managed this in my circle is by discussing our feelings openly after a conversation or joke that felt off. Instead of letting frustration build up, we paused and clarified intentions, which helped rebuild trust and understanding. Also, avoiding disrespectful talk in public or on social media is essential, as it can amplify misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Ultimately, respectful talk fosters love and trust in a relationship. It’s okay to joke around, but it must come with care and clear boundaries. Even if "things slip," consistent respect in communication makes all the difference in maintaining a healthy relationship.
