Having septum piercings can be both a unique form of self-expression and a challenge when it comes to maintenance and care. From my own experience, one of the most frustrating moments is when you have to resize your piercing. For years, I used a 6 gauge septum spike, but due to some irritation and an unfortunate nosebleed, I had to downsize to a 5 gauge. This downsizing process isn’t always straightforward because the hole doesn’t shrink perfectly, making it hard to insert smaller gauges without pain or damage. One particularly annoying issue I faced was losing the original spike—despite looking everywhere around my apartment, I could only find a tiny 14 gauge spike that barely fits. Losing piercing jewelry is common but stressful, often leading to improvising with less comfortable or aesthetically pleasing alternatives. Another aspect to consider is the delicate healing process after resizing. If you force a larger gauge back in too soon, you risk further irritation or bleeding. It’s best to listen to your body and take it slow. Meanwhile, personal grooming such as keeping up with hair color or style changes can complement your piercings and maintain your unique look. If you also wear gauges or other body jewelry, I’d recommend having spares in different sizes on hand. This way, you can avoid the sudden stress of losing or not finding the right piece when your piercing changes or jewelry falls out. In sum, septum piercing care requires patience, attention, and sometimes a bit of creativity to manage the unexpected hiccups like bleeding or lost spikes. Sharing these experiences not only helps others in the piercing community but also makes the journey more enjoyable and less isolating.
