Hey fellow Dragonborn! Choosing the perfect base in Skyrim is such a monumental decision, isn't it? After countless hours adventuring, slaying dragons, and delving into ancient ruins, you need a place to call your own. The game offers some truly iconic player homes, each with its own unique charm and challenges. I've spent so much time debating "Which home are they picking?" for my various characters, and I wanted to share my thoughts on some of the most popular options. Let's start with a classic: Breezehome in Whiterun. This is often the first house many of us buy, and for good reason. Its cozy exterior nestled right in the heart of Whiterun makes it super convenient. It's affordable and grants you easy access to everything you need – shops, trainers, and quests. While the interior is a bit small, it's perfect for a budding adventurer. Plus, you can't beat the central location for fast travel! Next up, we have Vlindrel Hall in Markarth. This one always catches my eye with its grand, Dwemer-inspired exterior. Inside, it's quite spacious, offering plenty of room for crafting stations, storage, and even a housecarl. If you're into alchemy or enchanting, this home provides ample space to set up your operations. The unique aesthetic of Markarth certainly extends to Vlindrel Hall's interior, making it distinct from the more traditional Nordic styles. Then there's Honeyside in Riften. Its humble yet charming exterior, right on the edge of the lake, gives it a peaceful vibe, despite Riften's notorious reputation. It's reasonably priced and even comes with a small garden plot if you enjoy alchemy ingredients. The interior feels lived-in and comfortable, making it a great choice for a sneakier character or anyone who loves the Thieves Guild. Now, for arguably one of the most talked-about homes: Hjerim in Windhelm. This house is a beast! Its imposing exterior in the freezing city of Windhelm definitely makes a statement. The Hjerim interior is incredibly detailed, offering a unique, sometimes eerie, atmosphere that’s perfect for a Nord warrior or a darker character. Unlocking it requires completing a specific questline, but the sheer size and detailed decoration make it worth the effort. There's so much space for displaying your loot and setting up your ideal living quarters. It truly feels like a lord's manor. For those with deep pockets and a taste for luxury, Proudspire Manor in Solitude is the ultimate prize. This home boasts the most elegant exterior in the game, standing tall in the capital city. Its interior is sprawling and opulent, with multiple floors, a beautiful library, and plenty of room for a family. The views from Solitude are also breathtaking, especially with those scenic landscapes of mountains and waterfalls in the distance. It’s certainly a statement piece for a very successful Dragonborn! Finally, for the magically inclined, we have the Arch-Mage's Quarters at the College of Winterhold. While not a traditional purchase, gaining access to this unique living space is a huge perk for mages. The exterior of the College itself is majestic, and the Quarters offer unparalleled access to both enchanting and alchemy stations, making it incredibly practical. The Arch-Mage's Quarters interior is more utilitarian than decorative, but it’s hard to beat the convenience and the sense of power it confers. It’s "free" in the sense that you earn it through your magical prowess, which is pretty cool! When I think about "Which home are they picking?", I often consider my character's playstyle. A stealth archer might appreciate Honeyside's location, while a brute warrior might feel more at home in Hjerim. A scholarly mage would obviously gravitate towards the Arch-Mage's Quarters. Each house offers a distinct experience, from the cozy Breezehome to the luxurious Proudspire Manor. What's your favorite and why?
