Meatballs with Brown/Mushroom Gravy
INGREDIENTS FOR MEATBALLS
• 1lb ground beef, I use ground sirloin
• 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
• 1/4 cup milk
• 1 egg
• 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
• 2 cloves garlic minced
• salt and pepper to taste
• INGREDIENTS FOR MUSHROOM GRAVY
• 2 cups mushroom slices
• 2tbs olive oil
• 2 cups beef broth
• 1tbs Worcestershire sauce
• 1tbs soy sauce
• 1/4 cup heavy cream (optional)
• salt & pepper to taste
( I cheated and bought mushroom gravy from the store)
INSTRUCTIONS FOR MEATBALLS
• Preheat Your Oven to 400°F
•Combine these ingredients In a large mixing bowl: ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, pepper and a dash of Slap Ya Mama for a little kick! Mix with your hands or a fork until combined. Avoid over-mixing, this can result in dense meatballs
• Form the mixture into meatballs approximately 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
•Place the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or lightly greased. Ensure there's space between each meatball to allow for proper cooking.
•Bake for about 20-25 minutes, until the meatballs are nicely browned
INSTRUCTIONS FOR GRAVY
• While the meatballs are baking, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the mushroom slices.
Sauté the mushrooms for about 5-7 minutes, add in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce, stirring to combine.
Bring the mixture to a simmer and allow it to cook for about 10 minutes. This will help the flavors meld and the gravy thicken slightly.
Incorporate Heavy Cream (Optional): If you want a creamier gravy, stir in the heavy cream at this stage. Allow the gravy to cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, then season with salt and pepper to taste.
• Once the meatballs are done baking, carefully add them to the skillet with the mushroom gravy. Gently stir to coat the meatballs in the gravy, allowing them to simmer together for another 5 minutes. This enhances the flavor of the meatballs, making them even more delicious. Serve over mashed potatoes, sautéed green beans and sister shubert rolls 😋
Meatballs with mushroom gravy are a classic comfort food that combines savory flavors and satisfying textures. Using ground sirloin provides a leaner yet flavorful base for the meatballs, and the addition of breadcrumbs and milk helps keep them tender and moist. The finely chopped onion and garlic infuse the meatballs with aromatic depth. Baking the meatballs at 400°F ensures even cooking and a nice browned exterior without drying them out. The mushroom gravy complements the meatballs perfectly by bringing umami richness to the dish. Sautéing fresh mushroom slices in olive oil enhances their natural earthiness before simmering with beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce, which add complexity and depth of flavor. The option to stir in heavy cream creates a luscious, velvety texture to the gravy that coats the meatballs beautifully. This dish pairs wonderfully with classic sides such as creamy mashed potatoes and sautéed green beans for a full, satisfying meal. Using pantry staples like soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce makes the gravy easy to prepare while maintaining robust flavor. For convenience, pre-made mushroom gravy can be used as a shortcut, though making it from scratch elevates the taste. For best results, avoid over-mixing the meatball mixture to keep them tender, and allow the meatballs to simmer gently in the gravy for a few minutes after baking to absorb more flavor. This recipe is ideal for family dinners or meal prep, providing a hearty and comforting option that stands out with its rich mushroom gravy.
