What happened next?

... Read moreWow, I'm still reeling from what happened with that client in Forney, Texas. It's truly disheartening when you pour your time and skill into creating beautiful braids, only for someone to refuse payment and then lie about not liking the hair. This kind of situation isn't just about the money; it's about respect for your craft and your livelihood. As Sleeknbraids, I pride myself on my work, and hearing 'I don't like my hair' as an excuse to not pay really stings, especially when the client seemed perfectly happy during the service itself. So, what did happen next, you ask? Well, in this particular instance, after a lot of back-and-forth, and feeling incredibly frustrated, I had to make a tough call. It's a fine line between standing your ground and avoiding a bigger scene. Sometimes, for the sake of your peace of mind and reputation, you have to cut your losses, even if it feels incredibly unfair. It was a horrible feeling, but it definitely taught me some valuable lessons about client management and protecting my business for the future. For any fellow braiders, stylists, or service providers out there, I've learned a few things the hard way that I wish I knew earlier. First, clear communication is absolutely key. Always discuss pricing, style expectations, and any potential challenges upfront, ensuring there are no surprises. Having a written policy, even just a simple one you can share digitally, can prevent misunderstandings before they even start. Secondly, taking a non-refundable deposit for services, especially for more intricate and time-consuming styles like box braids or twists, is a game-changer. It shows commitment from the client and protects your time and resources if they cancel last minute or, worse, try to dispute payment later. Another thing I've found incredibly helpful is taking 'before and after' photos (always with client permission, of course!). Not only are they fantastic for your portfolio and social media, but they can also serve as objective proof of the quality of your work if a dispute ever arises. It's sad that we have to think this way, but proactively protecting yourself and your business is crucial in this industry. I also try to manage expectations diligently during the consultation. Sometimes what a client envisions isn't always physically possible or might look different on them compared to a photo. Being honest and transparent from the start can prevent issues down the line. And finally, trust your gut. If a potential client seems hesitant, overly demanding, or gives off red flags during booking, it might be worth reconsidering. It's often better to avoid a potential headache than to deal with the emotional and financial aftermath. Dealing with clients who try to avoid paying or lie about dissatisfaction is emotionally draining and can make you question your passion. But remembering why you started, the joy you bring to so many other happy clients, and the community you serve helps you push through these tough moments. Building a supportive network with other stylists has also been invaluable for sharing experiences and getting advice. You are absolutely not alone in these struggles! Let's keep uplifting each other and our amazing art.

You are not defined by what happened to you.
What happened to you was not the end of your story. The pain. The betrayal. The loss. The seasons that brought you to your knees. None of that gets to be the final word on who you are. You are not your trauma. You are not your hardest moment. You are not what was done to you.
