🚨 Mild Spoiler Alert!‼️
So… I first read The Little Prince a few years ago, but recently decided to reread it after getting a great deal from Norris Bookstore (3 books for Rp. 99k !!!, how could I say no? 👀). And honestly, reading it the second time around hit me differently.
At first glance, it looks like a children’s story. But, it’s so much more than that. Beneath its simple language and whimsical tone lies a deep reflection on adulthood, loneliness, love, and the way we sometimes lose our sense of wonder as we grow up.
The story follows a pilot stranded in the desert who meets a mysterious boy so called the Little Prince who traveling from planet to planet. Each planet he visits is inhabited by a different character, each representing a certain kind of “adult behavior.”
E.g. On the third planet, he meets a drunkard who drinks to forget his shame. A perfect picture of how adults often deal with pain by burying it instead of facing it. Then, on the fifth planet, there’s a lamplighter who spends his days turning a lamp on and off, simply because he was told to. A symbol of blind obedience and devotion without purpose.
But it was the fourth planet that struck me the most, the businessman’s planet, where a man spends his life counting stars and claiming to own them. It’s a sharp reflection of how people chase wealth and ownership, forgetting the things that truly matter such as love, wonder, and connection.
Even though the book is short and can easily be finished in one sitting, it’s the kind that stays with you long after you close it. It’s gentle yet thought-provoking, simple yet deeply emotional. A timeless reminder that sometimes, children see more clearly than adults ever do.
If you’re in the mood for something short, reflective, and beautifully written or maybe if you just want a quick read to pull you out of a slump “The Little Prince” is the perfect choice.
