Hey everyone! I'm so excited to share my latest project with you all – my brand new custom surf rod build! After a lot of research and planning, I finally put together this beauty, centered around the incredible Vega Potenza 420 blank. If you're into serious surf fishing, you know how crucial a well-balanced and powerful rod is, and the Potenza 420 really delivers on that front. It's known for its superb casting distance and backbone, which is exactly what I need for targeting bigger fish from the shore. Choosing to go the custom route was a no-brainer for me. While there are plenty of great rods out there, nothing truly beats having a rod tailored exactly to your preferences and fishing style. For this build, I specifically chose a Fuji reel seat. Why Fuji? Their quality, precision, and durability are simply unmatched in the industry. I wanted a reel seat that would not only securely hold my high-performance reel through countless powerful casts but also feel comfortable in my hand during those long, active fishing sessions. The ergonomic design of Fuji seats significantly reduces hand fatigue, allowing me to focus on the fight. And then there's the guide train – another critical component that can make or break a rod's performance. I opted for a full Fuji guide train as well, using their K-series guides. The smoothness and corrosion resistance of Fuji guides mean minimal line friction, leading to significantly longer casting distances and better protection for my fishing line, especially when battling strong, aggressive fish in harsh salty conditions. The K-series guides are particularly excellent for managing braid and preventing tangles, which is a huge plus when you're quickly casting in challenging surf. Every component choice, from the winding checks to the butt cap, was made with the singular goal of creating a rod that feels like an extension of myself, giving me maximum control, sensitivity, and power when it matters most. The process of building it was incredibly rewarding, a true labor of love. From carefully prepping the blank and wrapping the guides with precision to fitting the reel seat and applying the final epoxy coats, every step deepened my appreciation for the craft. It’s more than just a fishing tool; it’s a piece of gear I poured my passion into, knowing it will stand up to anything the ocean throws at it. I've been dreaming of taking this bad boy out, and I'm particularly excited to christen it along the beautiful, fish-rich shores of Sea Bright. The local striped bass and bluefish won't know what hit 'em, and I'm confident this custom setup will help me land some personal bests!
