Hey fellow trainers! 👋 I recently dove back into the nostalgic world of Pokémon Yellow, and wow, it's just as captivating as I remember. Whether you're a first-timer or reliving your childhood, I've picked up some essential tips that have really helped me on my journey to become a Pokémon Master. Let me share my personal insights to make your Kanto adventure a breeze! 1. Embrace Your Pikachu Partner: Unlike other Pokémon games, your starter Pikachu in Yellow is unique! It follows you everywhere (how cute is that?), and it refuses to evolve. Don't worry though, this little electric mouse is incredibly powerful. Focus on teaching it good electric-type moves like Thunderbolt, and consider teaching it powerful TMs later on. Keeping Pikachu close by offers unique interactions and can even influence certain events. Plus, having a strong electric type is super handy against many Water and Flying Pokémon you'll encounter. 2. Snag All Three Kanto Starters Early! One of the coolest features in Pokémon Yellow is the ability to obtain Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle – the original Kanto starters – without trading! Here's how I got mine: Bulbasaur: Head to Cerulean City after beating Misty. You'll find a girl in a house who will give you Bulbasaur if your Pikachu is friendly enough (which it usually is!). Charmander: On Route 24, just north of Cerulean City, you'll meet a trainer who will give you Charmander if you defeat him. Squirtle: After defeating Lt. Surge in Vermilion City, talk to the police officer in the middle of Vermilion City. She'll hand over Squirtle to you. Having these three alongside Pikachu gives you amazing type coverage right from the start! 3. Build a Diverse Team for Success: While your starters are great, don't rely solely on them. Kanto offers a fantastic variety of Pokémon. I always try to build a team with good type synergy to cover my weaknesses. For example, a strong Ground-type like Dugtrio or a speedy Psychic-type like Alakazam (if you can trade to evolve Kadabra) can be game-changers. Don't forget about Snorlax (you get two opportunities to catch him!) and Lapras, which you receive for free in Silph Co. They are incredibly powerful with great stats and move pools. 4. Master Gym Leader Match-ups: Each Gym Leader has a specific type preference, and knowing their weaknesses is key! Here's a quick rundown of what I found most effective: Brock (Rock): Use Bulbasaur, Squirtle, or Nidoran (Male/Female) to learn Double Kick. Misty (Water): Pikachu and Bulbasaur are your best friends here. Lt. Surge (Electric): Ground-types like Diglett/Dugtrio will make quick work of his team. Erika (Grass): Charmander/Charmeleon/Charizard, or any Fire/Flying/Bug/Ice-type Pokémon. Koga (Poison): Psychic-types are super effective. Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam shine here. Sabrina (Psychic): Bug-type moves are surprisingly effective, but Ghost and Dark (which are scarce in Gen 1) also work. Nidoqueen/Nidoking with Earthquake is also strong. Blaine (Fire): Squirtle/Wartortle/Blastoise, or any Water/Ground/Rock-type Pokémon. Giovanni (Ground/Rock): Use Water or Grass types to dominate his team. 5. Don't Skip Important TMs & HMs: Hidden Machines (HMs) like Cut, Fly, Surf, Strength, and Flash are essential for navigating Kanto. Make sure to teach them to Pokémon that aren't crucial to your battle team, often referred to as "HM slaves." As for Technical Machines (TMs), some are incredibly valuable. Keep an eye out for Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Psychic, and Earthquake – these can turn an average Pokémon into a powerhouse! Many of these are found in dungeons or given by NPCs after certain achievements. Following these tips has made my latest run through Pokémon Yellow super enjoyable and much smoother. It's truly a classic, and I hope these pointers help you on your own exciting journey. Happy training, everyone!
