Tow Truck Driver Killed on I-20 in Dallas; Suspected Intoxicated Driver Arrested — Marks #8 Struck-By Line of Duty Death

DALLAS, TEXAS — March 19, 2026

A tow truck driver was killed in the line of duty Wednesday afternoon after being struck on westbound Interstate 20 at Spur 408 in Dallas, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:15 p.m. while the operator was outside the tow truck performing roadside duties. Authorities responded to reports of a pedestrian struck in the roadway and later confirmed the victim was a tow truck driver working the scene.

Emergency crews shut down portions of the roadway as they worked to render aid. The operator sustained critical injuries and later died as a result of those injuries.

The driver believed to be responsible was taken into custody and is facing a charge of intoxication manslaughter. At this time, the names of both the victim and the accused have not been publicly released as the investigation remains ongoing.

This tragedy marks #8 struck-by line-of-duty death of a roadside worker in 2026.

Eight lives lost.

Eight families shattered.

Eight preventable tragedies.

And we are only a few months into the year.

Slow Down Move Over Inc. extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of the fallen operator.

But let’s be honest. Condolences are not stopping this.

This was not an unavoidable accident. This was the result of a decision. Someone chose to get behind the wheel impaired. Someone chose not to slow down. Someone chose not to move over.

And now another roadside worker is gone.

Tow operators stand feet from live traffic every single day to help complete strangers. They deserve more than flashing lights being ignored and laws being treated like suggestions.

If this number keeps rising, it won’t be because we didn’t know better. It will be because people refused to do better.

Slow down.

Move over.

Drive sober.

Or stay off the road.

... Read moreHaving worked near busy highways, I’ve witnessed firsthand how dangerous roadside work can be, especially when drivers ignore move over laws. Tow truck drivers and emergency responders perform critical jobs mere feet from fast-moving traffic, relying entirely on motorists to slow down and create a safe buffer. The recent death of a tow truck operator on Interstate 20 in Dallas is a sobering reminder that impaired and distracted driving still pose fatal risks. Intoxicated drivers drastically reduce reaction times and judgment, making roadside work even more hazardous. In my experience, public awareness campaigns like #SlowDownMoveOver help, but enforcement and driver responsibility remain key. It’s heartbreaking to see eight families already shattered this year by preventable struck-by deaths. Each life lost is a call to action for all drivers: respect roadside workers by following move over laws, reduce speeds near emergency scenes, and never drive impaired. Flashing lights are not just signals; they are warnings to protect those who save lives and clear hazards. The message is clear — slowing down, moving over, and driving sober isn’t just the law; it’s a moral obligation to keep everyone on the road safe. Sharing personal stories and encouraging conversations around roadway safety can empower more people to take this responsibility seriously. We can honor these fallen heroes best by making our roads safer for all.
