Visiting the Istana in Singapore is a unique experience because it’s not open to the public very often—only five times a year. From my own experience and chatting with others who volunteer there, it pays to arrive early if you want to avoid long queues. Volunteers mentioned that people start lining up as early as 7 a.m., but from around 11 a.m. to noon, it’s usually much quieter, which makes a midday visit much more enjoyable. If you're nearby, a great tip is to first have lunch at Plaza Singapura, which is conveniently next door to the Istana. This way, you can relax and beat the heat before heading over. Speaking of heat, there’s very little shade around, so I recommend bringing an umbrella or hat and plenty of water to stay hydrated. Inside, the grounds are quite spacious and offer plenty to see without feeling rushed. Even if you don’t attend every activity or exhibition, exploring casually can easily fill up to three hours. There are also food stalls scattered around, so grabbing a snack or refreshing drink is simple. Getting there is easier than it seems. While some maps suggest a 16-minute walk from Dhoby Ghaut MRT, the easiest route is actually from the main entrance of Plaza Singapura—just step out and you’re practically at the Istana gates. During my visit, I was surprised to find the Presidential Palace under renovation, but the overall experience remained worth it. It’s a lovely outing for families too; my friends’ kids expressed interest in coming back, proving the visit’s appeal across all ages. In summary, timing your visit to the Istana to coincide with one of the few open days, like the upcoming November 1 date, and preparing with these tips will make your experience smooth and memorable. Whether you’re a resident or a tourist, it’s a special way to connect with Singapore’s heritage and see a side of the city not often accessible.
