I recently stumbled upon this creation during a casual dinner outing and was pleasantly surprised by its delightful combination of flavors. What makes this sushi stand out is how it incorporates sambal—a spicy, tangy chili paste that’s a staple in many Southeast Asian cuisines—and otah, a spiced fish cake wrapped in banana leaves, along with sotong (squid). This blend really captures the essence of local taste buds, resembling the popular nasi lemak experience but in sushi form. The inclusion of coconut rice inside the sushi adds a subtle sweetness that balances the spicy sambal perfectly. Having tried many sushi variants before, this fusion offers a refreshing twist. The fresh seafood combined with the bold flavors of sambal and a hint of the ocean from the sotong make it an exciting dish for those seeking adventurous eats or wanting to celebrate Singapore’s culinary diversity. It’s also quite affordable, priced around $7.90 for an 8-piece pack, making it a great snack or light meal.
