Generating cue questions afterward requires you to evaluate what matters. Writing a summary demands synthesis. Retrieval practice — the act of pulling information from memory rather than re-reading it — is one of the most well-established learning strategies in educational psychology. The cue column is perfectly designed for this. Cover your notes. Look only at the cues. Try to recall the content. This isn't just reviewing; it's self-testing, and research consistently shows that testing yourself on material produces far stronger retention than passive review alone.

3. The Summary Promotes Elaborative Interrogation

When you summarise a page of notes in five or six lines, you can't copy everything. You're forced to ask: What is the core idea here? How do these points connect? What can I leave out? This process of elaborating on and connecting ideas — what psychologists call elaborative interrogation — deepens comprehension and makes information easier to retrieve later.

The original Cornell system recommended a review schedule: skim the summaries within 24 hours, use the cue column for self-testing within the week, and return to full notes for deeper review before exams. This maps closely onto the principles of spaced repetition — revisiting material at increasing intervals to move it into long-term memory. The Cornell method essentially builds a spaced-repetition prompt system into the notes themselves.
