Nazare
Nazare is a surf town in Portugal. Also know for the biggest wave for surfing in the world. So beautiful. The views are so breathtaking.
If you're planning a trip to Portugal, Nazare needs to be on your list, especially if you love incredible vistas! While the town is famous for its colossal waves, the true magic, for me, lies in soaking in the panoramic views from its stunning viewpoints. Trust me, the photos don't even do it justice! My absolute favorite spot, hands down, is the Miradouro do Suberco, located up in Sítio. Getting there is an adventure in itself – you can take the funicular up, which offers its own fantastic views as you ascend the cliffside. Once you reach the top, prepare to be amazed. From this high viewpoint, you get an unparalleled perspective of the entire town of Nazare, with its charming white buildings and orange-tiled roofs nestled against the dramatic coastline. Looking down, you see the expansive sandy beach curving gracefully for miles, meeting the deep blue ocean. It's truly a sight to behold, especially when the sun glistens on the water, making everything sparkle. This cliffside viewpoint is also where you'll find the iconic Farol da Nazaré, or Nazare Lighthouse. It’s hard to miss this building with a red lighthouse sitting proudly on a rocky cliff, guarding the entrance to the ocean. For those chasing the thrill of the giant waves, this is ground zero. During the winter months, when the swell is massive, this is where surfers and spectators gather to witness nature's raw power. Even if the waves aren't breaking at their biggest, the sheer scale of the ocean from this vantage point is breathtaking. You can spend hours just watching the horizon, feeling the wind, and appreciating the vastness. Beyond the lighthouse, there are several spots along the Sítio cliffs that offer equally stunning views. I remember walking along the path, finding quiet corners to just sit and gaze out at the vast Atlantic. The air is so fresh, and the sound of the waves below is incredibly calming. You might even spot a quirky statue of a deer-headed figure holding a surfboard – quite a unique landmark that adds to Nazare's charm! It's a great place to capture some truly memorable photos, and the perspective of the distant wind turbines on the landscape adds another layer to the scenery. Another fantastic, though perhaps less frequented, spot is the Miradouro da Pederneira. Located slightly inland and higher up, it offers a different panoramic view, looking over Nazare town and further down the coast. It’s a tranquil place, perfect for a peaceful moment away from the main crowds of Sítio, providing a unique aerial perspective of the town's layout. And let's not forget the simple pleasure of walking along the long, curving sandy beach itself. Looking back at the town and the towering Sítio cliff, you appreciate the grandeur of the landscape from a different angle. The way the town's buildings line the coast, with the blue ocean stretching to the horizon, is picturesque. For anyone wondering about the best time to visit for views, honestly, Nazare is beautiful year-round. If you want to see the giant waves with surfers, plan for winter (October to March). But for general breathtaking ocean views and exploring the charming town, any time is wonderful. Just imagine watching the sunset from one of these Nazare viewpoints – absolutely magical. It’s a place that truly captures the heart of Portugal’s wild coastline and its stunning natural beauty.
