My facial expression at work.
Okay, let's be real. We all have those moments at work – that one coworker who makes you question everything, or that email that drops a bombshell right before quitting time. And in those moments, my facial expressions at work really need to learn their inside voice! Seriously, it's a constant struggle to keep a poker face when my brain is screaming, 'Are you serious?!' or 'Can this day be over already?' I swear, sometimes my face is a live broadcast of my inner thoughts. I’ve had countless moments where I’m pretty sure my eyes did an Olympic-level roll, or my mouth twitched just enough to betray my true feelings. It's like my face has its own agenda, totally independent of my professional demeanor! This is especially true during those long, drawn-out meetings that could have been an email, or when a colleague asks a question I've answered three times already. My "inside voice" is practically a megaphone, and my facial muscles are fighting a losing battle to keep it contained. It’s not always about negative emotions, either! Sometimes I'm trying to hide an uncontrollable giggle when someone says something hilarious but inappropriate, or I’m internally celebrating a small win but have to maintain a calm exterior. The challenge is real! How do you guys manage to keep your expressions neutral when you’re internally screaming, celebrating, or just plain bewildered? I've picked up a few personal tricks, though they don't always work! One thing I try is to take a deep breath and focus on a spot on the wall behind the person speaking. It helps distract my brain from letting my face react. Another is to subtly bite the inside of my cheek – not hard enough to hurt, just enough to give my face something else to do. For those really tough moments, I even try to think of something completely unrelated and mundane, like my grocery list, to reset my expression. And on video calls? That's a whole different ball game! I find myself constantly checking my own small video feed, just to make sure my 'resting annoyed face' isn't making an appearance, especially when my camera is on. It's an exhausting performance! I remember one time, my boss was explaining a new, incredibly complicated process that we all knew wouldn't work. My internal monologue was a mixture of disbelief and pure exhaustion. I could feel my eyebrows trying to climb into my hairline, and my lips wanting to form a sarcastic smirk. I literally had to press my tongue against the roof of my mouth and consciously relax my jaw to avoid looking like I was about to burst out laughing or cry. It's these little battles we fight every day, isn't it? Another common scenario is when someone shares a piece of office gossip that is so outlandish, you want to react dramatically, but you also want to maintain an air of professional detachment. Or when you finally finish a huge project, and all you want to do is fist pump the air, but you're in an open-plan office. The struggle to keep those genuine emotions from painting themselves all over your face is a universal office worker facial challenge. So, tell me in the comments: What's the funniest or most challenging situation where your facial expressions almost gave you away at work? And what are your secret strategies for keeping your 'inside voice' from showing on your face? I'm always looking for new tips to maintain my professional facade, even when inside, I'm doing a full-blown dramatic monologue! Let's share our collective wisdom on mastering the art of the perfect, neutral work face.
