You don’t HAVE to buy anything - Amazon Prime Day

Reminder: You don’t HAVE to buy ANYTHING during Amazon Prime Day!

I know it’s super hard to not be tempted by influencers and other people on the Internet making posts all about the “Best Amazon Prime Day Deals” and “Things You Should Buy During Amazon Prime Day.” But let me deinfluence you - to be honest, you don’t need most of that stuff.

Unless there is something you already had your eye on and had in your cart to buy and we’re waiting until Prime Day to purchase it when it went on sale, I totally respect that and that is absolutely valid! I just don’t want us to get pulled into the overconsumption that is often displayed (and encouraged) on social media.

I’ve been doing a deep clean of my room recently and getting rid of old stuff that has just been sitting around and I don’t use anymore. I’m telling you, going through your stuff and doing a deep clean will make you reassess how much stuff you *actually* need (especially if you have a history of overspending/overconsumption like me).

I have barely even looked on Amazon the last few days because I don’t want to tempt myself to buy something I probably don’t need just because it’s on sale. And there’s nothing else I truly *need* to stock up on, so there’s no sense in even looking at the website.

Don’t let yourself get caught up in the FOMO of it - I promise you, you don’t need it.

Here are my tips for avoiding buying during Amazon Prime Day:

🌟Ask yourself: Do I `really need this or is there something else I already have that will serve the same purpose?

🌟Ask yourself: Is it actually useful or is it just aesthetic? Do I just like the color?

🌟Remember a larger goal you have in mind, such as a new car, computer, apartment, etc. Try to put away the money you would have spent at Amazon into a savings account towards that goal.

🌟I’ve seen anecdotal reports that some of the “deals” this Prime Day aren’t even deals. The prices of some items were the exact same as they were before Prime Day.

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard me say you don't have to buy anything on Prime Day, but let's be real, it's easier said than done sometimes! I know firsthand how tempting those 'limited-time deals' can be. It feels like everyone else is grabbing incredible bargains, and that FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) is a powerful force. But over the years, I've developed a few more tricks up my sleeve that have really helped me stay strong and avoid those impulse buys. One strategy I swear by is the 'pre-Prime Day inventory check.' A week or two before the sales hit, I actually go through my home, especially areas where I tend to accumulate things (hello, kitchen gadgets and beauty products!). This helps me see what I already have and often forget about. It's a fantastic reminder that I'm probably not lacking much, and it helps me visualize the clutter I don't want to add. It also connects back to that powerful message: 'You don't have to buy anything during Amazon Prime Day just because its on sale.' Seeing my own stuff makes this ring true. Another game-changer for me is the 'cooling-off period.' If I see something that truly catches my eye, instead of immediately adding it to my cart, I add it to a separate wish list or just screenshot it. Then, I give myself 24 to 48 hours to think about it. Usually, by the next day, the initial excitement has worn off, and I can more rationally ask myself those crucial questions: 'Do I really need this, or is there something I already have that serves the same purpose?' and 'Is this actually useful, or do I just like the color?' More often than not, I realize it was just a fleeting desire, not a genuine need. This simple pause is incredibly influential in my decision to not make purchases. I also try to remember my bigger financial goals. That new car fund, saving for a trip, or even just building up my emergency savings – those are far more exciting and fulfilling in the long run than a discounted gadget I might use twice. I literally have a sticky note on my computer reminding me of these goals. When I feel that urge to browse Amazon, I look at that note, and it helps me redirect my energy (and potential spending!) towards what truly matters. Sometimes, I even transfer the amount I would have spent into my savings account. It's like giving myself a little reward for resisting! Finally, it's about shifting your mindset. Instead of thinking about what you're 'missing out on,' try to focus on what you're gaining – financial peace, less clutter, and the satisfaction of making conscious choices. It's a powerful feeling to know you're not controlled by sales tactics. This Prime Day, let's challenge ourselves to embrace 'underconsumptioncore' and truly buy only what we need, not what the internet tells us we want.

This made me realize that I don’t need any of the stuff from Amazon atm. I get too excited about sale just because all those influencers are buying stuff from Amazon and share how cheap it is…
