Backstory!!
With our 1st I really wanted a natural birth, obviously the safety of our child is always our top priority and we’ll always take the recs of the doctors around us. She was breach and IUGR so for her safety I had a c-section at 36 weeks! My second birth I had a successful vbac, but also had failed epidural and it was TERRIBLE. Being stuck in a bed unable to move around and in that much pain was terrible. This pregnancy I was so excited about the possibility of giving birth at a birth center but after further research found out that Florida doesn’t allow vbacs at birth centers 🥲 I was so sad because I love holistic alternatives to pain and have always loved working with midwives! I will probably still get a doula for the hospital for support but share your top recs for what prepared you for a natural birth, your experience, if you would do it again, etc!!!
Having experienced both cesarean and vaginal births, I've learned that preparing for a natural VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) requires mindset, knowledge, and support. Each pregnancy is unique, and having a birth plan that is flexible is crucial. For me, the failed epidural during my second birth was a challenging experience that taught me the importance of considering holistic pain management techniques. One major takeaway is the value of movement and mobility during labor. Being confined to a bed can intensify pain and reduce progress, so using positions like walking, leaning, or squatting can facilitate labor and help manage discomfort naturally. This is something I was excited to explore more during a birth center delivery, although regulations in Florida limit VBACs there. Working with midwives and doulas can make a huge difference. Midwives often provide personalized and holistic care options, including massages, warm baths, and breathing techniques that can ease labor pain. Doulas offer continuous emotional and physical support, which was invaluable for me especially during hospital births. From a preparation standpoint, prenatal classes focusing on natural childbirth methods and VBAC information are incredibly helpful. Connecting with other moms who have had successful VBACs can provide encouragement and practical advice. Nutrition, hydration, and physical conditioning throughout pregnancy also contribute to a smoother labor experience. Ultimately, prioritizing the safety of both mother and baby while exploring natural birth options can lead to a rewarding and empowering birth experience. For those in states like Florida where certain birth locations restrict VBACs, advocating for yourself within the hospital system and assembling a supportive birth team can help ensure your wishes are respected as much as possible.
