I absolutely love all of our children’s names and think the “Kn” we started together promotes unity in the minds of our children and family. The world and our culture has gotten so far away from doing things as a collective and names represent so much more than letters.
As we gear up for another year of homeschool, I hope other teachers and professionals see this and understand the importance of name identity and how it correlates to self confidence & self love.
Naming our children with unique 'Kn' combinations has not only forged a strong sense of unity within our family but also made us appreciate how names shape individual identity and confidence. From personal experience, I've noticed that when children embrace their names proudly, it directly boosts their self-esteem and sense of belonging. In our homeschooling journey, we emphasize the importance of name identity to help children gain confidence in their uniqueness. Encouraging kids to assertively pronounce their names teaches them to value themselves and their heritage. This has been especially meaningful in our community, where unique names can sometimes be mispronounced or misunderstood. A simple yet effective practice we've adopted is having children introduce themselves at the start of the school year and encouraging classmates and teachers to practice saying their names correctly. This creates a respectful learning environment and empowers children to own their identities fully. Additionally, names like Knatural, Knoah, and Knoble we chose are deeply connected to family stories and cultural backgrounds, which further strengthens children’s self-love and pride. For example, Knatural reflects our first 'epidural-free birth,' symbolizing natural beginnings and resilience. I've seen firsthand how understanding and celebrating names in educational settings can combat the erasure of cultural identity and support social-emotional growth. It’s essential for teachers and professionals to recognize name identity as a foundational part of each child’s confidence and success. In summary, unique family names are more than just letters—they are powerful symbols of heritage, unity, and self-worth. Embracing and properly pronouncing these names helps children develop strong self-identity and promotes a more inclusive culture in education and beyond.
