Blick Art Contest Entry

Wow, I'm so thrilled to share my entry for Blick's October Pen & Ink Contest! This year, I really wanted to dive into something spooky and fun, and what's better than a furry witch? I know 'furry witch' is such a popular concept, and it's been amazing to see all the creative takes out there, from detailed illustrations to even webtoons that feature similar magical characters. There's just something so enchanting about blending animal characteristics with mystical elements, isn't there? For my piece, I really focused on creating a unique character. My furry witch is a cat-like character, and I spent a lot of time on her expression – that sly look over her shoulder, complete with subtle fangs, really brings out her mischievous personality. And of course, a witch isn't complete without her hat! Mine's a classic striped witch hat with a little bell, adding a touch of whimsy. I also loved designing her striped leggings and that long, curled tail, which gave me a chance to play with line work in pen and ink, making it a true black and white pen and ink drawing. Speaking of pen and ink, it's such a fantastic medium, especially for capturing intricate details and strong contrasts. I find it so satisfying to watch a character come to life with just black ink on paper. It pushes you to think about shadows, textures, and line weight in a different way than digital art or even painting. If you're new to pen and ink, I'd highly recommend experimenting with different nibs and ink types. Fineliners are great for control, but a dip pen can give you such expressive lines! Participating in contests like Blick's is always a fun challenge. It really motivates me to try new things and push my artistic boundaries. It's not just about winning; it's about the process, seeing what others create, and being part of a creative community. Sometimes, seeing how other artists interpret similar themes, like a 'furry witch,' can spark so many new ideas. You might even find inspiration for your own fanart or original character designs for a webtoon project, much like the creativity seen in fanart for beloved series like 'Darkaltrax' or 'Hopscotch Planets'! I've always been fascinated by how characters can evolve, whether it's through fanart inspired by beloved series or completely original concepts.
