Here’s a highlight from the panel I did with @(Casey) hotdogsinrobotform on The Intersection of Queerness and Disability in Fandom Spaces at GalaxyCon San Jose! Thank you so much for giving us a platform to speak on the things that matter most to us. Love y’all. ❤️ Full panel is on my podcast channels (The Lovercast)!
Fandom spaces have long been a sanctuary for individuals to express their passions and identity, but they also serve as vital communities where people with intersecting identities—such as those who identify as queer and have disabilities—can find belonging and support. The panel at GalaxyCon San Jose underscored how fandom, when approached inclusively, creates environments where people can explore their identities safely and authentically. The quote from the panel, "fandom in and of itself, when done right, is a safe space for folks to really understand themselves, explore their identities and camaraderie," highlights the potential of fandom spaces to foster acceptance and connection. This is particularly meaningful for queer disabled fans who might not always encounter acceptance in broader society. Communities that reflect shared values promote inclusivity and reduce barriers. Whether approached through popular games like Call of Duty or broader fandom activities such as cosplay, these spaces encourage participation without judgment. The panelists pointed out that fans bring varied experiences and identities, which enriches the fandom culture when valued. GalaxyCon was noted as an example where thoughtful community-building leads to support networks reflecting these ideals. Representing disability and queerness together in fandom can challenge existing stigmas and open dialogue around accessibility and representation. Moreover, such panels inspire organizers and attendees to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion in fan conventions and online fandom platforms alike. This engagement fosters new friendships and validates personal experiences, creating a positive feedback loop that strengthens fandom communities overall. For fans navigating multiple marginalized identities, fandom not only offers entertainment but also empowerment through shared stories and advocacy within inclusive spaces.
