Big Bend National Park

... Read moreOh my goodness, if you're looking for an unforgettable outdoor adventure, hiking the Santa Elena Canyon trail in Big Bend National Park is absolutely a must-do! I still can't get over the sheer scale and beauty of this place. It's not just a hike; it's an immersion into an ancient landscape where the Rio Grande has carved a masterpiece. Before you go, here are a few things I learned that might help you make the most of your trip. First, when to visit: Spring and fall offer the most pleasant temperatures. I went in late spring, and the mornings were glorious, but it can get pretty hot by midday, especially walking the exposed path to the canyon mouth. Always carry plenty of water – seriously, more than you think you'll need, even for what seems like a short hike! Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sturdy hiking shoes are non-negotiables. The trail itself is generally well-maintained, but there are some rocky sections, and you might encounter mud, especially if the river levels are up after rain. The actual Santa Elena Canyon trail is about 1.7 miles round trip, and while it's relatively flat once you get past the initial climb up and over "The Wall," it offers stunning views that will make you want to linger. Don't let that small distance fool you; you'll want to take your time to soak it all in. Getting to the trailhead involves crossing Terlingua Creek, which can be dry or require a shallow wade depending on recent rainfall. This adds a unique element to the adventure! I'd recommend checking park conditions for creek levels before heading out. Once inside the canyon, the towering limestone walls rise dramatically, often over 1,500 feet, creating a truly awe-inspiring sense of scale. The air inside feels different, cooler and more serene, a welcome respite from the desert sun. My favorite part was watching the sunlight play on the canyon walls, constantly changing their colors from golden to deep ochre throughout the day. You can often spot peregrine falcons soaring above, and the unique desert flora clinging to the cliffs is fascinating to observe. The trail takes you along the river's edge, offering stunning views and countless photo opportunities at every turn. Listening to the gentle flow of the Rio Grande, knowing it forms the border with Mexico, adds another layer of wonder to the experience. It truly feels like you're walking through a giant, natural cathedral. Beyond the sheer beauty, this hike is a fantastic way to experience the unique ecosystem of Big Bend. Keep an eye out for various bird species and even tracks of desert wildlife near the water's edge. Remember to leave no trace, pack out everything you pack in, and respect the incredible wilderness around you. This isn't just a hike; it's an experience that connects you deeply with the raw power and majestic beauty of nature. If you're planning a trip to Big Bend, make sure hiking the Santa Elena Canyon is at the very top of your list. You won't regret it – it's an adventure that stays with you long after you've left!

One of my favorite hidden gems in Colorado! Hanging Lake in Glenwood Canyon is a breathtaking oasis, perfect for a summer adventure. The crystal-clear waters and stunning waterfalls made this hike absolutely worth it. The hike itself is 1.2 miles, steep, rough, and rocky, but again well worth it! ⛰
